Chapter 13: August the 17th Report

General Summary

A torn, snow-covered page...

...again and again until the first light of dawn warms our skin. Gods, I've missed him.
His friends have been sweet enough, stranger than a Beholder keeping a bar, but plenty sweet. The dead one was able to free me from the Abbey, but I'd hazard a guess that it took more out of him than he let on on account that he couldn't quite get everyone outta there all together. I wish I could have warned them about Strahd, but I couldn't bring myself to remember it at the time. I can't say whether I was more surprised to see them all booking it outta there without the Dreadlord, or to see the entire Abbey explode in a beam of light; they are something, maybe we might have a chance here afterall.
All together we made out way to my cart and the wizard Khazan's tower. Again, I tried to stop myself, but the Dreadlord's words sat like a weight on my chest. "Return to your teacher. Kill him when no one can stop you. When he's dead you will then be free to witness my sleeping agents subvert all of your good works over my land and my people will learn the cost of daring to hope." I did. I killed Rudolph. I screamed in my own mind to stop, but I couldn't, I was weak. Then came a miracle. Whatever spirits or powers Vorthos' Shadar Kai friend contends with, they'll have my thanks for a hot minute, because she knelt over Ru's corpse and wished him back from nothing.
The Guardians made good on their promise to help me and Emil, even though it now meant sneaking into the Castle to save him from the dungeon again. I fancy myself a bit of genius for the plan of how to get in -- I figured "Emil" and I escaped through Strahd's teleportation circles, why not go backwards! When we made it into Vallaki, the gang wanted to stop by the Burgomaster. Come to find out, they were the ones who blew up the last one and put up this Ireena girl! No one can say they're boring.
We plan on entering through Strahd's teleportation room and jump down into the dungeon to look for Emil and Vorthos' crew. Apparently Strahd has had them here for an Elven minute and that kinslayer Majordomo has been torturing them to some sick and twisted end. I remember seeing them in the torture chamber, as well as some old geezer, so I'm feeling optimistic about our chances for finding them. Here's hoping we can pull this off and don't find any surprises along the way!
