Braddock of Conteign
Braddock (a.k.a. Braddock, The Wanderer)
Braddock of Conteign, also known as Braddock, The Wanderer was an explorer from the city of Conteign. His writings on the continents of Ashorene and the Barrens of Arcta have informed much of the early opinions on these continents, as well as his time in the distant lands of the Verraine Forest and Zafirah Peninsula.
Returning to Conteign, Braddock was hailed by the lord as a hero to the Kingdom, and was sent to spend time at court in Old Rudora. For two years Braddock discussed, plotted and planned for his next grand expedition, the Aelves having informed him of a distant City-State that was beginning to prosper, Maqara.
Upon return to the Kingdom, Braddock would again be well received, but with only tales of vasts stretches of wastes and menial tribal bickerings, the response from the Rudoran Court was found to be lacking in his eyes. Hungry for the worship he had previously experienced, Braddock set out to planning a third expedition, grander and more impressive than anything past.
Eventually rescued by a ship loyal to the Thane of Thertodur, Braddock found rescue and recovery in the Thane's court, receiving the same warm welcomes he had gotten in Old Rudora after the first expedition. When he was well, Braddock returned, not to Conteign, or the court of Old Rudora, but instead back to Calpurnia, the return port of the expedition.
Life
Early Life (184-200)
Braddock was born the third in the harvest season of 185, the fourth son of a farming family that tended the fields that belonging to the lord of Conteign, little prospects would exist for Braddock as indeed any serf would fall beneath the tide of serfdom.Service in the Royal Guard (201-211)
After Aelven riders poured into Rudorei in 201, Braddock would be conscripted into the lord's host. During these conflicts, Braddock would impress the lord of Conteign, who would offer him a position in his personal guard. He would continue serving through to 211 when he was able to convince the Lord to fund an expedition to explore the lands south of Amandale. The Three Expeditions of Braddock of Conteign (211-234)
The First Expedition
Granted a charter by the King of Old Rudora, Braddock and his expedition departed south through Amandale into the Verraine Forest and Verraine Grasslands. It was here that the first contact was made with the Aelves of Allve Alari.Returning to Conteign, Braddock was hailed by the lord as a hero to the Kingdom, and was sent to spend time at court in Old Rudora. For two years Braddock discussed, plotted and planned for his next grand expedition, the Aelves having informed him of a distant City-State that was beginning to prosper, Maqara.
The Second Expedition
The expedition would set off once again from Conteign in 218 travelling south towards Allve Alari where ships had been comissioned for the journey. The ship was christened the Unbreakable and pointed westwards towards another city, Onfanora on what is now known to be the Barrens of Arcta, but would have been thought of at the time as an extension of the mainland. In attempt to find Maqara, the crew sailed west by northwest looking across the continent for any signs of civilization, it was on the approaches to Ghaznylan that the Unbreakable began taking on water and needed to be scuttled having nearly lost the ship and it's contents in sight of land. Nearly all of 222 was spent among the Ghaznylani as he worked on speaking to shipbuilders in a language he did not speak, using currency that he did not have. Records do not survive of how he was able to achieve this, but a new ship was launched in 223 and the Unbreakable II was launched in early 223. Sailing north across the Gate to the Zafirah Peninsula, Braddock was able to confirm the Barren of Arcta to in fact be it's own island, seperate from the mainland. Sailing East, the city of Maqara was spotted, still a young city he found not the kingdoms of Kirshall or Rudora, but petty squabbling tribal leaders not unlike the Ferrani. Attempts to explore Zafirah were made throughout 223 and 225 but incursions further inland were considered an insult to the Zafiran religion and much of the time was wasted handling tribal diplomacy. The return across the sea of Amal Anore was quiet but did lead to the discovery of Kelth'Anore, who while aware of the Aelves of Allve Alari, were not inclined to speak positively of them.Upon return to the Kingdom, Braddock would again be well received, but with only tales of vasts stretches of wastes and menial tribal bickerings, the response from the Rudoran Court was found to be lacking in his eyes. Hungry for the worship he had previously experienced, Braddock set out to planning a third expedition, grander and more impressive than anything past.
The Third Expedition
Much can be said about the third expedition, the cursed expedition as many would take to call it. Departing from Calpurnia in 227 upon his new ship the Unbreakable IV, with the Sanguine and Heroine behind him, they south past Scarletsilt Island with ill winds, they would reach the site of what is now known as Braddockstown in the winter of 227 and would spend the next two years combatting the harsh environments. While preparing for the winter of 228, the Sanguine was sent north to the Orimid Empire in an attempt to sure up additional provsions for the rest of the journey. The Sanguine would not return, and additional escalating crises forced the expedition to depart Ashorene in 229. The provisions running low with the failiure to find plentiful game in Ashorene, and the dissapearance of the Sanguine meant the fastest route past the Fell Islands would need to be taken. It was here that the ships encountered and were captured by Alinor, The Blooded. Braddock would spend the next few years prisoner until on chance occasion, was able to find an opportunity to escape.Eventually rescued by a ship loyal to the Thane of Thertodur, Braddock found rescue and recovery in the Thane's court, receiving the same warm welcomes he had gotten in Old Rudora after the first expedition. When he was well, Braddock returned, not to Conteign, or the court of Old Rudora, but instead back to Calpurnia, the return port of the expedition.
Life in Calpurnia & Death (234-250)
After his returning to Calpurnia, Braddock spent the next several years spending the rest of his remaining gold paying for boarding as he awaited the return of any of the crews of the Unbreakable IV, Heroine or Sanguine. Braddock would die in the Summer of 250 a demented and broken man who would oft scream in the night of the torture experienced in the Fell Islands.
