Lizardfolk Lair

The lizardfolk inhabit an underground complex beneath a large low mound that rises out of the mist-covered coastline of the Drowned Forest, a day's sail southwest of Saltmarsh. Although the lizardfolk's lair appears to most travelers as little more than a geological quirk in the swampy landscape, perhaps the weathered extrusion of some volcanic upwelling from aeons past, it is in reality the remains of something much more special.   The lizardfolk's lair hides the remains of a large Old Essalian dwelling, perhaps a manorhouse or palazzo, that appears to have been reclaimed by nature in the many centuries since the Essalian Cataclysm. Many of the complex's chambers and hallways, including the room which houses the Amethyst Throne of Queen Othokent, were originally part of the older building and retain the beautiful stonework and intricate mosaics for which Essalia was famed. Repairs and the addition of new rooms and passages by the tribe over the years mean, however, that most of the complex is a blend of architectural styles.   Access into the lizardfolk's stronghold can be had in one of two ways. By land, one can follow a rough trackway that ends at a large muddy cave in the mound's western side. Defended by giant lizards that live below the cavern floor, the cave houses a pair of arched doorways that lead into the complex. The stronghold can also be accessed from the Azure Sea through a small cave entrance on the northeastern edge of the mound. Wide enough for one boat, the seaward passage leads to a deep pool within a cavernous underground chamber complete with various shoreline facilities.
