Haberbeem

An old city, risen from the ashes of Dragon's Fire, Haberbeem is a free city on the continent of Aseth and a major player in its regional politics. This is thanks to a number of factors, including control of Dorian's Arms which command the access to Lake Dorian, a rich source of adamantine, and a well-protected bay. The city is a magnet for commoners, nobles, clergy, and adventurers alike. In a constant state of growth for the last decade, it shows no signs of stopping. However, Haberbeem's enemies move confidently in the open with their plans to strike at the city, hoping to conquer it and secure both its adamantine and control of the access to Lake Dorian.

Demographics

Haberbeem is a majority Human settlement with different sections of the city dedicated to other species. For this reason, despite the overwhelming number of humans, there are sections within the city where other species are common sights.

Government

Haberbeem is a Noble Republic where public officials are elected from among landowning elites who bear titles of nobility. These titles can be purchased by wealthy individuals as long as they own land within the city. Elections are a public affair where all landowning citizens are guaranteed a vote.

Defences

Haberbeem is circled by a large wall which is dotted by circular towers. Further into the city, the second wall circles the old city with squared towers. The main defensive structure in the centre of the city is a large castle complex constructed atop the Old Mound in the middle of the River Spey.

Industry & Trade

Haberbeem's primary export is adamantine which is mined within the city's borders. While not the primary source of its trade powers, its discovery allowed the city to accelerate its growth into a powerful trade hub.

Infrastructure

Haberbeem is built on the old city of Asherum with most roads being old and in slight disrepair, except for the main roads. Many large homes and estates mirror the architecture of the older city with houses being built around large central rooms.

Assets

Utilizing its wealth as a trade hub and its influence over its regional neighbours, Haberbeem has amassed both a powerful navy and a large army. Its armies are often engaged on expeditions abroad and in the defence of the city's borders.

Guilds and Factions

The Guilding Association produces a large number of trained adventurers that are often hired off as mercenaries, they hold enough sway within the city that they've been designated an entire section of the city known as the Guilds Quarter.   Watersives, while not individually politically powerful, have formed a political alliance which boosts their voice within the city a hundredfold. Their control of the city's water resources gives them effective control over the whole city which in turn allows them to continue to enforce their hegemony.

History

Originally built during the Gods Plague, Haberbeem rose to minor prominence during the Dragon's Shadow when its mines of adamantine were first tapped. Fighting back any Drow which contested the claim from the Undercroft, the city secured itself as an important hub of human resistance. The Dragons Hero Aerus was born in Haberbeem and his adamantine armour was forged by Haberim smiths. However, the city was destroyed in a clash between Vydiolat and Belhemat. The citizens abandoned the city and its adamantine mines were lost reducing it to a minor settlement. The rediscovery of its mines in the last century has reignited the heart of the city, giving it the economic leverage required to push itself back into the forefront of regional politics.

Architecture

Thanks in part to an early Dwarven influence, the old buildings of Haberbeem are squat, stone structures with large central rooms and many side rooms. While not always translated into the modern architecture, which is a mixture os shorter stone structure and timber structure, large central rooms are a common feature of homes in the city and its territory.

Geography

The city is located by Dorian's Armsin the northeastern portion of Aseth. Built between several hills with the centremost hill, the Old Mound, being the location of the Grand Keep of Haberbeem. Haberbeem is a coastal city located on the northern shore of Lake Dorian. The city possesses plenty of farmland but struggles to produce enough fresh drinking water for the populace without the assistance of mages. Watersives, mages who make a business purifying and creating water, hold a great deal of influence in the city. To the East of the city is the Badgerwood, home of the Forest Spirit Kadakron.

Natural Resources

The region around the city of Haberbeem is one of the few places in the world where expeditions into the Undercroft may prove exceptionally profitable thanks to relatively accessible sources of adamantine near the surface. This grants Haberbeem economic leverage which even whole kingdoms may lack.
