Fjúrúnsil

Fjúrúnsil or healing sleep is a common term for a state which dwarves or -less commonly- those with dwarven ancestry enter when grievously wounded, during which their body uses up its magical reserves to create a rush of healing magic, making them more likely to survive. This leaves them vulnerable, however, as the person loses consciousness until they've regained some arcane energy, though this also hastens the healing process.
The main drawback of this ability is that the amount of healing depends heavily on the person's magical reserves at the time, and won't activate in those who have spent all their arcane energies beforehand or have some form of disorder which inhibits their ability to absorb, store or unleash magic.
Because of this, most dwarves who can afford it keep a small pouch of charged magic crystals on their person just in case, and warriors generally prefer using a Magic staff rather than relying on their own magic attacks in battle.

History

Early human inhabitants of the Wild Mountains were the first to witness this ability during their encounters with Proto-Dwarves, which became inspiration for numerous tales and myths in the region after the latter migrated elsewhere.
Fjúrúnsil later became an important factor in the success of the Zameltoníans during their conquest of much of the Meldon Plain in central Adynía, as seeing their mortally wounded warriors seemingly rise from the dead on the battlefield would seriously affect their enemies' morale, and make potential rivals think twice before fighting the dwarves.
The zameltoníans also became adept at crafting better magic staves to avoid expending their own magic in battle, as well as making enchanted armour to protect themselves from their opponents' magic attacks, both of which are still commonly used by various dwarven warriors and mercenaries to this day.
