Wardwood
History
Wardwood is a special type of wood only found in the forests of Reshyk. It is by far the hardest material in the world, in terms of labor, to harvest -- even more so than Petrasteel. The reason for this is the unique property it displays of being capable of building resistance to various types of damage. For example, if you were to hit it with an axe, the axe would be half as effective the next time you swing it, and a quarter as effective the next time. And if you hit it a third time, the axe would simply bounce off on the next swing. This adaptive property does not apply to just physical damage, however -- as the wood appears to be able to resist a variety of types of metaphysical damage as well, such as fire or acid produced by a spell. However, its one weakness appears to be spells with a necrotic effect, which causes the wood to wither.
This wood is by far one of the most expensive materials found in Greentide, and only the rich can really afford to purchase it, which means it is extraordinarily rare to see it used as one of its most obvious applications -- a shield. The Dwarves are currently researching applications of Runetech which could potentially be used to harvest the material more easily so the price can be lowered.
Wardwood appears to have been created by a Wellspring eruption from Aellor's Wellspring thousands of years ago.
D&D 5e Game Mechanics
Wardwood progressively becomes more resistant to all damage types except for necrotic. However, getting hit by multiple damage types in a short period can overwhelm the Wardwood and cause it to lose its resistance temporarily. The most common use for Wardwood is shields, as they use little wood. When you are hit by an attack, it increases the number of charges on the item. Refer to the following table to see what happens depending on the number of charges on the Wardwood item.
- After taking 1 hit, you gain resistance to that damage type for 3 rounds.
- After taking a second hit from the same damage type, you take only 1/4 damage from that damage type for the next 3 rounds.
- After taking a third hit from the same damage type, you become immune to that damage type for 3 rounds. Taking further hits refreshes the duration of the immunity.
If you have two or more charges on the Wardwood, and are hit by an attack of a different damage type than the Wardwood is currently resistant to, the resistance immediately ends and the Wardwood cannot become resistant to any damage type again for 3 rounds.
If the Wardwood item is damaged by necrotic damage, all resistances immediately end and are disabled for the next hour.
