Personal history

Acheron was born eight years after Hades. The two were not especially close, but were on decent terms. As time passed, Acheron, a mere Duke, became quite jealous of his brother, Hades, who was the Prince of Tartarus. This resentment grew until he began plotting to usurp Hades.
Acheron's opportunity came when the Principality of Inferna declared war on the Principality of Tartarus in an attempt to gain access to Tartarus' large quantities of water. Hades was visiting a city on the border at the time, which came under siege by the Infernal army. The only Tartarean military force close enough to break the siege belonged to Acheron, who kept his soldiers back. Hades attempted to repel the Infernals on his own, but ultimately failed, and was slain.
Acheron claimed that he kept his forces back because of reports of a second Infernal army, but Persephone, Hades' wife, didn't believe him, and ordered him arrested. She then took command of his forces, and drove out the Infernals, albeit with some difficulty.
After the war ended, Persephone ordered Acheron to construct a great gate in the only entrance to Tartarus, in order to atone for his crime. He was to construct this gate alone and using only simple tools, and was told he would be pardoned when he completed it. When the construction was nearly complete, Persephone appeared at the gate unannounced, restrained Acheron, placed him in the last unfinished section of the wall, and finished the construction herself. This place was named Acheron's Gate.
