Leprechaun
Basic Information
Anatomy
Leprechauns are short humanoids. They have a minor connection to Magic, granting them the ability to create basic illusions. They do this by manipulating light, so they can't make illusory sounds or physical sensations. They can make three small illusions or one medium-sized illusion at a time, and must concentrate to keep them active.
Genetics and Reproduction
Leprechauns reproduce sexually and are viviparous. Their gestation period is six months.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Leprechauns have average senses. Contrary to what some Shaogalans may believe, leprechauns cannot smell money.
Civilization and Culture
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Leprechauns are traditionally artisans, and aren't typically considered adults until they can create at least three different products of good quality. In many families, especially the older and more traditional families, the three items that must be created are the same for every child and are related to the family's specialty. In newer, less traditional, families the items are typically decided by what the child is personally interested in.
Leprechaun children are typically also taught the basics of merchanting, but this is not considered as important, and as such, is not subject to testing.
History
There was always a rivalry between the leprechauns and the Clurichauns, and they were always trying to outdo each other. However, over time, this rivalry began to turn bitter. One day, a Clurichaun from a major family, the Artagains, was murdered in Ios Caillean. The family blamed their neighbors, a leprechaun family by the name of Donaill, for the murders, but the Summer Guard determined that there was not enough evidence to implicate the Donaills. In the end, the Guard wasn't able to find the culprit.
Utterly convinced that the Donaills were responsible for the murder, the Artagains set out for revenge. Three of them ambushed one of the Donaills and killed him. The Donaills confronted the Artagains, the entire family gathering in front of the Artagain house and shouting for the murderers to come out. The Artagains stayed inside while the Donaills jeered and threw stones at the house. The Summer Guard came to disperse the Donaills, but not before a stone went through one of the windows, striking an Artagain infant in her crib, killing her instantly.
This event caused an uproar among all of the city's Clurichauns. For a week straight, there were protests demanding things ranging from the arrest of the one who threw the stone to the execution of the entire Donaill family. The Summer Guard acted, thoroughly investigating the situation. Unfortunately, thoroughness and speed do not go hand in hand, and the Clurichauns wanted immediate action. The protests turned to riots, first targeting the Donaills and their associates, then targeting leprechauns in general. The leprechauns responded with riots of their own, and the city began to descend into chaos. The Summer Guard attempted to quell these riots but found little success.
The Clurichauns were angry at the leprechauns, the leprechauns were angry at the Clurichaun, and both were angry at the Summer Guard, accusing them of protecting murderers. The riots quickly escalated into an all-out civil war, with the Clurichauns and leprechauns fighting, and the Summer Guard trying to protect the other citizens of Ios Caillean while not killing anyone. Before long, the Guard was forced to switch to lethal tactics, further inflaming anger against them.
This war spread to the other cities of Selríocht, throwing the entire kingdom into turmoil. The war raged for six months, ultimately resulting in the Clurichauns being driven out of Selríocht and into Duairlacht, where they were welcomed.
After the war ended, the leaders of the leprechaun side of the war were arrested and executed for treason, due to their attacks on the Summer Guard and other military forces. Some leprechauns attempted to revolt, but with the Clurichauns out of the picture, Selríocht's military forces were able to quell these revolts with relative ease. To this day, the Clurichauns and leprechauns still hate each other, and many leprechauns are also still resentful towards Selríocht's military forces, although few of them voice such opinions publicly.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Leprechauns generally hate Clurichauns. Much to their chagrin, the two are often conflated.
Leprechauns are often stereotyped as being greedy and paranoid, and as a result, hiding their money in bizarre ways. This originated from stories spread by Clurichauns, but they have managed to turn it to their advantage, often perpetuating the idea that they hide their money in ridiculous ways, such as burying it in a pot underneath a bridge with a single clover plant growing over where it is buried, to distract from the more mundane methods that they actually use to protect their money, such as putting it in a safe.
Those who look down upon leprechauns sometimes refer to them derogatorily as "leppies" or "leperchauns" Another common way to insult leprechauns is to refer to them as Clurichauns. Clurichauns in particular often refer to leprechauns as "baby-killers", referencing the event that led to the civil war between the leprechauns and the Clurichauns.
