Marid

Marids are a type of Djinn. They are the guardians of oases.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Marids are amphibian-like humanoids. They have retractable claws on their hands, very sharp retractable teeth, webbed feet, very tough skin, very long and prehensile tongues which are so durable that they are incapable of damaging them with their teeth, and have gills in addition to lungs. They can also transform some or all of their body into water for a limited duration.

Combat

Marids are very dangerous. In addition to their natural weaponry, they're typically quite well-equipped. A common tactic of marids is to turn into water, enter an enemy's body, and tear them apart from the inside. They can also manipulate a person's body from inside.   In their solid form, marids have no special resistance to cutting, piercing, or blunt damage. In their liquid form, they are immune to these things.   In their solid form, marids are somewhat resistant to fire, and somewhat weak to electricity and cold. In their liquid form, marids are immune to fire, very weak to electricity, and extremely weak to cold.

Genetics and Reproduction

Marids reproduce sexually, and are oviparous. Their incubation period is eight months.

Growth Rate & Stages

Marids gain the ability to transform at the age of twelve.

Ecology and Habitats

Marids generally live near water, typically oases and rivers. Their heat tolerance is above average, but a bit lower than most other Djinn.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Marids are omnivorous, and are somewhat adaptable.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Marid society is de jure part of the Principality of Jahannam, but is de facto separate. The Prince of Jahannam doesn't generally attempt to interfere in marid business, and even if he did, he would probably be ignored.   The central authority of marid society is known as the High Commander. Below the High Commander is the Commander of each individual group of marids. Both positions are hereditary.   The High Commander lives in Wahatkubra. The High Commander dictates the basic laws that the various marid groups follow, as well as being the Commander of Wahatkubra. Marid society is quite decentralized, and the Commander of each group sets most of their group's laws.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Most marids live in Jahannam.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Marids have exceptional hearing, above average eyesight, and are otherwise average.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

In regard to gender, marids are generally egalitarian.

Common Etiquette Rules

Politeness is expected, as long as it doesn't get in the way of honesty.

Common Dress Code

Marids typically wear minimal clothing, and the clothing they wear is almost always made of materials that won't be damaged by water. Clothing decoration is common, as long as it does not negatively impact the clothing's practicality.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Unlike other varieties of Djinn, marids are generally completely separated from the rest of society, and because of this have developed a separate culture. It is quite rare for a marid to leave an oasis, but it does happen occasionally.   Marid culture is quite martially-oriented, with marid children traditionally being trained to fight starting as soon as they can walk, and most popular sports being combat-oriented.   Marids are given their first weapon at age nine, and their first set of armor at age fifteen.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Marids are traditionally the guardians of oases and rivers. They kill anyone who tries to conquer, defile, or destroy these water sources. Marids will allow anybody to access the water from oases and rivers, as long as they carry no weapons, poisons, or anything else that could be used to attack them or damage the water source.

Common Taboos

Marids are often not permitted to form any kind of connection with non-marids, and in some groups, marids aren't allowed to leave the oasis or river they're guarding, except to travel to a different one. The consequences of breaking these rules range from ostracism to execution, depending on the group.   Pacifism is incredibly shameful among marids, and pacifists are often disowned and ostracized.   Marids are expected to be completely neutral to the politics of the Principality of Jahannam, as well as Irkalla as a whole. The punishment for participating in outside politics is typically banishment, unless it negatively affects the marids, in which case the punishment is typically execution.   The absolute worst crime any marid can commit is trying to limit access to, defile, or destroy a water source. The punishment for any marid who does one of these things is to be chained at the top of a fifteen-foot pole, above a pool or barrel of water, and left to die of dehydration. Anyone who frees or gives water to a marid punished in this way is subjected to the same punishment.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Marids are feared by almost everyone in Jahannam. Stories of the effectiveness and brutality of marids in combat dissuade potential attackers as much as, if not more than, their actual defenses. Most marids do not have a strong opinion of other races.
