Principality of Naraka

Structure

Naraka's titles of nobility are as follows:
  • The Prince, who rules Naraka.
  • The Dukes, who rule cities and are subordinate to the Prince.
  • The Counts, who rule large sections of cities, and are subordinate to the Duke of their city.
  • The Barons, who rule districts in cities, and are subordinate to the Count of their district.
There are various administrative positions that these nobles may choose to appoint people to in order to help lighten their workload. These employees can be appointed from either the peasantry or the nobility, but they must live in the noble's governed area.

Agriculture & Industry

Agriculture is more significant in Naraka than in any other place in Irkalla due to their quite (some other Irkallans would say excessively) fertile land. However, it is also generally more dangerous than in any other part of Irkalla, since Naraka's wildlife is so much more dangerous.   Farmland in Naraka is in between the interior and exterior wall of a city. In the event that a city needs additional farmland, an additional wall is constructed around the required section of land, connected to the main wall, and a gate is built in the main wall. Even being totally walled-off, working on these farms is quite dangerous. Various creatures, typically those that can fly over or dig under the walls, find their way into the farmland, which makes it necessary for farmers to wear armor and carry a weapon while going about their work. All farms have guards posted by the city's duke (which is required by order of the Prince), and most farmers also employ one or two personal guards. All of these people (and often their families) live in the farmhold, a fortified building made entirely of stone and located near the fields. Even with these measures, farming in Naraka is dangerous work, and as such, farmers are generally quite well-off and are held in extremely high regard by those who work in the cities.   Similar measures are taken for other jobs that must be done outside of the city, such as quarries and mines. Similarly to farmers, those who work in these places are held in quite high regard and are typically well-off. In the event that a mine must be located outside the exterior wall, another wall is constructed around the mine, along with a road leading to it. In addition to the miners, these mines are staffed by military personnel, identical in composition to the outposts along the walls.

Infrastructure

Narakan cities are made as follows: Most buildings within the cities are made primarily of wood. All cities have at least one wall around the city, known as the interior wall, and a smaller wall, known as the exterior wall some distance outside of that, with a large stretch of land in between. All roads between Narakan cities are walled along the entirety of the part of the road that is outside of the exterior wall.   The exterior walls of cities and the walls of the roads are dotted with outposts each consisting of a small fortification containing a contingent of military personnel. These are: a platoon of soldiers, to defend the outpost and discourage banditry, a team of stonemasons to keep the road and walls in good condition, and a squad of scouts, who look for damaged parts of the road and walls and keep an eye out for any potential threats from outside the walls.   In the rare case that a building is constructed outside of the walls, it is almost always made entirely of stone and typically serves as a fortification in and of itself.
