"It is my duty to ensure that the splendor and progress born in these lands will not go to waste. I will not rest until they have been shared with the rest of the world. I pledge my life and my deeds to you, my people."
Emperor Eran I. on the day of his coronation
Founded in 575 AF as a successor of the Kingdom of Hokka. Expanded its territory during the following century beyond its original island by conquests and colonisation of most of the Phoaga Archipelago and the continent of Ienas, namely
Pyresbitae and the
Republic of Jhoris. Lost part of its territories when
Xakuma won its war of independence in 648 and failed to conquer the city of Molungo in the Hokkaylian war in the latter half of the 7th century. Has since fortified its borders to the east and south and gained new territory in the northern continent of Amruth after defeating the
Phaeranic Realms in 768. Its acting Empress Kara II. is
Longlived and has therefore sat on the thrones for over a hundred years.
The original Kingdom was founded on the island of Romahi, but quickly expanded to include most of the Archipelago's islands. These islands, with exception of Karon, are generally seen as the heartland of Hokka and share a similar culture. The holdings in Ienas have only been conquered in the last two centuries and its native inhabitants are often seen and treated as second-class citizens. Since its native inhabitants have mostly been driven to the north and east, the colonies in Amruth are mostly made up of emigrated Hokkans, who enjoy the same rights as they do in the Archipelago.
Hokka has no unified religion or belief system. Most inhabitants of the archipelago practice a mixture of ancestor and nature worship, mainly focused around trees and forests. In the territories on Ienas the
Xomay(Religion) belief is widely practiced. The remaining native population of Amruth are still followers of
The Mission of Kalou.
The Empire rarely interferes with the religion of its citizens. One notable exception was the imprisonment and execution of Xomay priests in Xakuma after they had endorsed protests and armed resistance. This turned public opinion against Hocca for good and triggered the Xakuman war of independence.
Currency
Noma (plural Nomai): Small, rhomboid gold and silver coins depicting the Empress. Their value is derived from their weight. A rudementary form of paper money existed for a short period of time in the early 7th century but was quickly banned because it was easy to forge (and it wasn't as durable in the humid climate of the archipelago).
"Triumphant in unsteady waters"
Banner of the Hokkan Empire, depicting the emblems of the ruling Tandofir family on top of a stylised volcanic island.
