Sanerekvaarn

Geography

Sanerekvaarn is located in the north-east of The Timberland Wood. It is a large, jagged chasm which cuts across the base of a deep crater like a scar.   The walls of the crater are approximately 30ft. tall with a single slope in the south-west leading from the forest down to it's base. The area surrounding the opening of the chasm is more barren than the surrounding forest; no trees grow in this area and the grass appears brown and wilted.   Found at the centre of the crater, the edge of the chasm is surrounded by large rocks, which appear to have erupted out of the ground. Below the surface, the base of the chasm cannot be seen from the surface as the walls fade into the darkness after about 60 ft. It is unknown how deep this opening truly goes.

Fauna & Flora

The treeline surrounding Sanerekvaarn stops quite abruptly close to the edge of the crater is it found in. To the south-west of the crater, the trees are shorter than their neighbours, causing the canopy to dip. As the south-western slope descends, the normally lush, green grass of the forest becomes duller, and more unkempt n appearance.   No forest wildlife can be found in this area, with all beasts seeming to avoid the area. Unusual sounds and animal-like calls can sometimes be heard echoing from the depths of the chasm, the source of which is unknown.

History

Sanerekvaarn is not a naturally formed cave, but instead the result of a climatic fight during The Confluence. During the time when the elves were still a formidable force on the continent, a mage called Korfel Yealdrin lead a group of Bladesingers to the area know known The Timberland Wood to combat a local infestation of denizens from the elemental plane of earth. The two sides fought for several days, until a Zaratan, one of the elder Earth Elementals, appeared from the Ersatz Mountains. The elves fought bravely, but many perished. Korfel was able to fend off the Zaratan with a well-placed Meteor Swarm which cause it to flee back to the mountains.   Since then, the Zaratan has not been seen and the forest in the surrounding area has grown back to hide the evidence of this climatic battle. However, the ground at the base of the crater Korfel created with his spell has become fragile and some time in the last 100 year the large chasm opened.   Since it's discovery by the people of Aryvandaar, it has been named Sanerekvaarn (meaning "evil cave" in elvish) due to the unnatural noises which come from it's depths and the apparent decaying of the nearby flora.
