The term Gold may technically be a word that describes the metal of the same name, but to most it is synonymous with the coin known as the gold piece. Often abbreviated to 'gp' in writing, the gold piece is one of the three standard coin metals throughout Ethae, along with Silver Piece and Copper Piece. While silver coins are the most common used in every nation, it is by the value of gold that the silver piece gets its own value. As a standard it takes 10 silver pieces to equal 1 gold.

While traditionally most coins of all types have a similar weight and size, as well as the distinctive disk shape the gold piece is the exception. In Ethae, each nation has their own style when it comes to gold coins. Novyum gold are generally coins with straighter edges, octagons (eight sides) being the most common. In Lakorth and the Heartlands a long tradition of using heptagon (seven sides) shapes, while north in Nopum a pentigon (five sides) is used. In Anbar and Tinjir the disk shape of all coins is used. In the Southern Reach of Ethae, the Kingdom of Marras mints its gold coins with a gold core disk having a silver outer ring. The coins are larger and more valuable that other nations, with their 'crowns', as they call them, equally 20 silver pieces rather than the standard 10. Note that in Marras other nations gold pieces can be used, but the Marras 'crown' coin is not considered currancy and will be melted down by other nations to mint their own coins with the gold and silver.

Gold as currency is more common in the trade routes throughout the Cota Ocean, between the major continents. Originating from the Dergonhad, the 'gold bar' is a strip of gold roughly the size and weight of two Ethae coins, these bars are equal to 20 silver pieces. This has them often cut in half in many Ethae ports to equal their coins. A second currency of gold used in Dergonhad and the Cota trade is the 'gold brick', which is equal to 10 gold bars (coins).
