Wyvern Basin
In the northeastern region of Alkun there is a broad depression between the Wyvern Hills in the west and Barrier Peaks comprising its eastern border. It is divided into three major regions by Wyvern Gulf in the deepest part of the valley. This area is, perhaps unsurprisingly, called the Wyvern Basin.
The lands enclosed within the Basin vary widely in character, flora, and fauna. Where the west tends toward windswept, rocky, cold, and somewhat stark, the eastern region is lush and verdant by comparison. This is due in no small part to the glacially enriched soil from the forbidding Barrier Peaks and natural irrigation with few wetlands. The entire Basin teems with game, particularly caribou, reindeer, boar, and abundant fowl and fish.
The area is dotted with crumbling ruins from some forgotten past, but so far no scholars have braved the journey to study the remains. What we do know is the most recent settlement was founded in the first century of the Fourth Age by Halgar Hammerfist, and gradually formed into the Kingdom of Svalbard a little over two centuries later. Being geographically isolated, Svalbard has played no great role in geopolitics, apart from its propensity to raid and pillage coastal settlements within and outside its own borders.
