Apprentice
Apprentices are trainees in a trade or business. Usually, someone enters into their apprenticeship at fourteen years of age, though that can vary. Only a Master is usually permitted to train an apprentice, though Journeymen can do so under the supervision of a Master in some cases. The Master is expected to provide room and board for the apprentice, so usually apprentices are the children either of Masters or the Journeymen under their supervision.
In rare, but not unheard of, cases, a Master will take on an apprentice whose parents (or even more unusually, the apprentice, themselves) provide payment upfront for their training. In theory, this payment is intended to cover room and board, but in practice, it is often a revenue stream for the Master.
