Dirtirith Halril

Troubadour of Stars Dîrtirith

Silver hair and silver tongue
Their voice was sweet with silver song
Upon their head a silver band
A silver star upon their hand

O Dîrtirith! Star Troubadour!
Your voice will echo evermore
In crystal halls of fairy lords
Enraptured by your peerless chords
It is said that the children of the dawn look forever east, walking the paths of memory to places that are no more, and can never be again. It slips through the nets of song and dance they weave to catch it, evaporates from the wine they pour in its memory, and every garden they grow and tower they raise is naught but a pale echo of Luminias that was.   But the World That Is is filled with broken, ever-changing beauty, and there are some who turn away from mourning the morning to see it. Such a one is Dîrtirith, Troubadour of Stars, messenger-consort of Realta, who wanders the Four Kingdoms at will, whose song is said to soften the hearts of Unseelie Queens and Infernal Kings.

Personal history

Before shape and substance, Dirtirith danced with the First Minds among the ephemeral towers and lyrical gardens of Luminias. Surrounded by pure creativity and free spirits, they experienced reality through the expression of song, delighting in the ways that music controlled and reflected the energies of life and sentience.   When Luminias fell, Dirtirith escaped. When the world was divided, like Ioth, Dirtirith held dear the light of Dawn, becoming an Alfar. But unlike the Archmage and his companions, Dirtirith was curious and eager to wander the world. The physicality of incarnation, limiting as it was, intrigued the newborn Alfar, and they wanted to experience and understand the Mortal World with all its pains and flaws. So Dirtirith traveled across the continents, meeting the young mortal peoples--the Humans, the Orcs, the Fey who danced between here and there. They loved and lost and tried a little bit of absolutely everything, picking up stories and experiences along the way. For hundreds of years Diritirth was content to learn the songs of a thousand nations and the kiss of a thousand lovers.   In time, Dirtirith could once again hear the song thrumming beneath it all--the interplay of song and silence that makes up reality. Even though the Dawn was divided and the Emerald Tablets constrained this new world, its fundamental vibration remained. This revelation, the fruit of years of a life fully lived, was what allowed Dirtirith to truly move on, almost uniquely among the Alfar. What was lost was beautiful, but what now was, was also beautiful. Dirtirith learned the hidden chords and melodies that transcended even the laws of the Emerald Tablets: the Primal Music itself.

The Death of Erecura

So it was that when Uzhul's blood-iron blade shattered the Sovereign of Stone, Dirtirith felt the jarring discord from across the world. The Infernals, the same tyrants who devoured the light of Luminias, returned in force to conquer and control the peoples of Anacra.   A new era of loss and flight began for Dirtirith. The tragedy they knew from the Dawn now fell upon the mortal tribes and nations whose songs they'd learned for all these years. But this time, they were not defenseless--the Primal Music gave terrible power to Dirtirith's voice, power that could sway and dissuade even the most bloodthirsty demons. Dirtirith continued their travels, this time passing from one beleaguered community to another, hiding them and helping them flee by secret paths between the worlds. Tales spread across the Eastern and Western continents alike of faerie changelings spiriting away lost children to the Underworld before the Demonic Imperium fell upon their villages, of chiming music and gossamer visions that left barely a memory. Dirtirith saved lives and learned songs of sorrow and hope alike.

The Troubadour of Stars

Many years later, after the apotheosis of Ramius, the descent of The One Flesh and the rebellion of Realta, Dirtirith served as the Queen of Stars' Troubadour, consort and companion. They bore messages to those anointed by the Kindler, appeared to the dying to offer them a place in the celestial host, and wandered still between the worlds, subject only to their on whims and the wishes of their beloved queen.   A tale is told among the fey that a time came when Realta wept, bereaved of a lover. To comfort her, Dirtirith wandered the world in search of a gift by which she could treasure the memory of the lost. By paths unknown they stumbled upon the Gossamer Daughters, spider-fey who dwelt in the heart of Glassweb Grotto. They hungered for the sweet music of his blood, and they obliged them, letting them drink of their veins. When the shimmering blood fell upon the roots of a glass tree at the grotto's heart, it sprouted and twisted, changing into a living harp. The Gossamer Daughters stopped their feast in awe, and the wounded Dirtirith set their fingers upon the glass strings and sang a mourning song that broke their hearts. Now more than blood they craved music, and gave them a gift of gossamer. They took it and wove a gown which glowed with the light of the fallen stars, and gave it to Realta as a gift of solace.   It was in this office, bearing the mantle and powers of the Troubadour of Stars, that Dirtirith spoke to Allan O'Dale, Eren Vol, Lysha Norwalyn and Thoras Giantbane, hoping against hope to guide them towards a kind resolution to the Quest for the Book of Dawn.
