Personal history

To the elves of Andarud, there is no such thing as an illegitimate child. Every new Alfar born to the refuge is claimed by one parent, and when Hadarai was born to one of the most celebrated and honored courtesans in the Skyless City Haemir An'Andarud was proud to claim him as his own.   In childhood, Hadarai benefitted from the attention and focus of his family. As Cothromóir Mór, Haemir was often busy and away, but arranged for family members from the Na'Andarud branch to raise his children. Hadarai was particularly close with his elder brother, Lamruil. The two studied together, ran through the twisting metal skyways of Andarud together, read stories about the great Alfar wizards together. From a very early age Hadarai grew to admire Ioth, the great archmage of legend and survivor of Luminias, but Haemir wanted all of his children to learn from the best abjurers in the land (in his own mind).   This left Hadarai with an intense yearning for knowledge, to push outside the confines of Andarud, a longing he shared with Lamruil. Even as the two began studying the Gyre, learning to attune themselves to its vibrations, to follow its rhythms and in time change them, Hadarai focused his mind on plunging deeper within. The planar phenomenon that secured their home between two worlds had layers and folds within itself, places Hadarai believed would lead him through, and then beyond. He practiced long hours with Lamruil, building metal contraptions designed to resonate with the Gyre to experiment on pulling specific tones from it and analyzing them individually.   Rivals of the House of Andarud, the Sorcerers of Luwynn, discovered these illicit experiments, tracked their progress, then sabotaged Hadarai and Lamruil. The biggest skysteel array they'd built so far echoed out of control, creating a pocket of the Andarud refuge that threatened to simultaneously resonate into both the Mortal World and The Otherworld at the same time. Though the two young wizards destroyed the array before any lives were lost, the Sorcerers of Luwynn used this opportunity to turn the other Cothromóirí against Haemir's would-be heir.   To help their father save face, Hadarai and Lamruil left Andarud behind. Having just come of age, Hadarai was eager to see the world he'd only read about, meet the people to home his refuge sold magic and weapons, witness the depredations of the Demonic Imperiums with his own eyes, and visit the other refuges.   It was a brief time of adventure for two young adult elves. They met with the autumn Huldra of Fomhor, beheld the glorious gemstone towers of Nuldamire Refuge, tested themselves against the powerful sorcerers of Charir, traveled the watery streets of Masru, and stood atop the holy ziggurat-temples of Brontha. It was a wild time for the two brothers, out of supervision and free to do as they pleased.   But the world was full of danger, and the exploits of the careless prodigals attracted attention. War wizards of Eythgos used their magic to track down Lamruil and Hadarai, intent on capturing them to extract the secrets of Andarud's defenses. The brothers were taken by surprise and nearly abducted when a strike force of fiends and warlocks teleported directly on top of them. A desperate magical battle ensued that wrought havoc on their surroundings.   For five years Lamruil and Hadarai lived on the run, constantly wary of scrying sensors and shapeshifted fiendish spies. Fortunately for them, they'd made friends along the way. Rimem Rhogar of the tribe of Charir joined them in leading their fiendish pursuers into a trap high in the mountains above a volcanic crater. Together they wiped out the fiends and the wizards pursuing them, and Rhogar sent a glowing commendation back to their home.   But the Sending spell meant for Haemir never arrived. The Cothromóir Mór was dead at long last. Heartbroken, his two sons returned to Andarud determined to reclaim their titles and honor their father's memory. Despite the Sorcerers of Luwynn's campaign of propaganda, the rest of the Cothromóir were intrigued by the brothers' strong bond with the Charir tribe--a very wealthy potential client--as well as the connections they'd made during their travels. After demonstrating the extent of his art and mastery over the Gyre, the Cothromóir not only instated both brothers into their numbers, but elevated Hadarai to the role of Cothromóir Mór.

Lamruil Lost

Immediately upon becoming Cothromóir Mór, the two brothers used their access to continue their research, attempting to understand the Gyre itself. Within its harmonic overtones and overlapping resonances, they believed they could find all that lay without by pressing inward. For seven decades, while Lamruil focused entirely on their studies of the Gyre, Hadarai balanced his research with carefully managing the prosperity and political strength of his family. His travels to the Priest Kingdoms and Dragon Tribes gave him many useful contacts, and these friendships meant new clients for the weapons and spells that made Andarud famous. Under his clever guidance, the prosperity of the refuge grew, and luxurious goods from across the continent flowed in to the city. Hadarai became quite the popular leader.   This success attracted the keen eye of Naivara Casselltinera, one of the greatest artificers of the refuge and a key member of an important guild. She spent a few decades courting Hadarai and he teasingly returned her affections, playing cat-and-mouse until they finally arranged a formal bond in 6812. Not only did they bring each other joy, but they strengthened each others' positions in the refuge.   Disaster struck in 6837. Lamruil and Hadarai finally replicated the complex resonant array sabotaged long ago by the Sorcerers of Luwynn, but larger, of more harmonious materials, and with the knowledge they'd gained from decades of balancing the Gyre. Infused with magic and struck with hammers at key points, the humming of their metal device became part of a sonic spell array that gently parted the complex patterns of the Gyre, widening them without otherwise altering, allowing the two brothers to finally look through this fold in magical space to see what lay beyond their reality.   None of the other Cothromóir felt the impossible unfolding of the Four Kingdoms occurring at the very heart of the Gyre. Nobody learned of the experiment or its outcome until an ashen-faced Hadarai stumbled out of his laboratories, his eyes wide, his hair gone entirely silver, his heart pounding against his ribs like a desperate prisoner. Lamruil was gone--claimed by the dangerous experiment they'd conduct.   The Cothromóir gathered for a formal funeral, even though the body was gone--"consumed by the accident," Hadarai said--and though in mourning, they carried on.   Years later, Naivara Casselltinera gave birth to Athalor An'Andarud, and Hadarai claimed the son as his own.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Hadarai is a hard man to read, which helps as the defacto leader of Andarud. That said, outside of balancing and maintaining the gyre and his political connections throughout Andarud, he spends the majority of his time in arcane research, exploring the most esoteric interactions of magical fields and furthest boundaries of magical knowledge.   Until his only son Athalor An'Andarud left for Ioth Academy, Hadarai's other great focus was his child's education. Even when he was busy with his duties he made sure that Athalor had access to books, stories, teachers and resources to foster his young and bright mind.
