The Scribes
The Dawn World required no record keepers. No order beyond the wishes and imagination of its denizens. No natural law.
But when the Elemental Sovereigns divided the Dawn into the Four Kingdoms, all nested within each other and turning like the wheels of a great machine, Anacra became ordered, and when the worlds became ordered the Scribes manifested from them. Deep within the Underworld, at the very locus of Anacra, they monitor the workings of the Firmament and all creation. Their will is inscrutable, their designs unfathomable. They are the keepers of the Emerald Tablets themselves, the laws of nature. They are the Scribes.
Structure
Nobody is certain how many Scribes there are. Some believe there is one for each kingdom, one for each element, one for each cardinal direction, one for each phase of the Endless Cycle, one for each position of the sun. Some believe their numbers fluctuate as required by their duties.
Culture
Each scribe is a faceless, vaguely mechanical, multi-armed, gargantuan entity. First-hand accounts of the Scribes are extremely rare; those who claim to have seen them usually attribute their perception to visions, divination spells, or arcane phenomena. By all accounts, their movements are synchronized as they manipulate the flow of elements up from the wellspring, surrounded by coruscating streams of elemental and supernatural energies. There are no recorded accounts of individuals standing in the presence of the Scribes. Only Ramius and the Elemental Sovereigns can reasonably claimed to have seen the scribes firsthand. They have no interest in direct contact with mortals, and mortals are advised to avoid such.
Public Agenda
The Scribes maintain the integrity of the firmament and record/enforce natural & alchemical law. They intervene when there are major disruptions in the arrangement of the Four Kingdoms or severe damage to the firmament. They oppose entities of the Hungry Dark, but only interfere with other business when it violates or alters the laws of nature.
