Arcanic Energy

Arcanic energy (A) is a kind of magical energy that exists in the Anareta universe. It is evidenced by the presence of thaumions (Θ) , a rare kind of scalar elementary particle that mediate Arcana and its resulting background field across the known universe. As a form of dark energy, Arcana is inert to most normal matter, but small-scale thaumic interactions with some materials such as Thaumium result in thaumions being trapped in crystalline lattices which can later be 'attuned' to release their thaumic energy.
People weaving the energy around them, trapped or yielded from a star system or planet's arcane field, is the major component of all traditions of spellweaving.

Metamagic

The school of metamagic is focussed on the understanding of thaumic scalar fields and their larger-scale applications. Within that field of study, such domains as enchantment and transmutation are mundane terms for the science of embuing or engineering magical items that make use of thaumic energy to generate spell-like effects.
A few worlds display greater interaction with thaumic scalar fields. The arcanospheres of Aistanar and, more powerful by orders of magnitudes, Zindra display dancing aurorae visible throughout these worlds. On the nodes of leylines where the flow of thaumic energy coalesces and concentrates, it can be quite common for Shades to manifest.
