Thaumium War

The Thaumium War was a planetary dispute in the 10th and 11th Cycles between the Boshaari Council and the newly-formed Hiderid Coalition of Stars over the legal status of the Thaumium-rich world Zindra. Control of the planet's vast resources (far and uneconomical as it was) and the opportunities in ship-building and power projection it represented by both parties as valuable economic assets.   It was the Council - a Boshaari far-trader whose name was curiously lost to history, but surely seeking to find fortune at the edge of the system - that probed Zindra first and discovered the thaumic mineral, critical for the interplanetary operation of Dive Drive. For the Coalition, this was a relief, as Hakaria was already running out of the trace amounts of the precious thaumic metal it could find and prospect - but to rely on the Boshaari Council was a widely unacceptable solution in every boardroom.   The newly-reelected President Kjrx Frkx played by Boshaari rules : by sending a manned probe first and creating the first "settlement", he invoked his diplomatic right to claim the entire planet. This angered Boshaari leadership, and ten mothballed Council vessels were sent and blockaded the space above the new settlement. As Zindra is an outer world and the Council ships could not manage territory control with such stretched supply lines, many Coalition corporations outright ignored them.   The situation boiled over when a Coalition vessel, the HSS Krjkshar, fired upon the BSS Esaree. Council and Coalition black ops teams landed planetside and systematically sabotaged groundside installations. Projections by the neutral Mewei Domain showed that the amount of Programmable Matter being spent on the conflict could threaten the long-term viability of any colony across Tau Elpis, as industrial bases and indepedent production lines had not yet been established by all colonies.   The Domain sought to broker a deal which split Zindra into sixteen equal zones. One would go to the Domain as a "fee", two would go to the Boshaari (and, for the sake of fairness, two more were to the Hhrot, which became no man's lands, for the Hhrot never bothered to settle). The remaining eleven zones were each given to a Hiderid colony site corporation, formally granting rights of exploitation to much of the planet to the Coalition. The Council agreed with the understanding that the two Boshaari zones were richer than the Coalition ones (which they were, but far less than anticipated both Council and Coalition soon formally ended their state of war (called the Compromise of Frost) and resumed colonial cooperations.
