Arch-Hieran
The Arch-Hieran (pronounced arr-KIRE-ann, usually, though if you're being really precise, it should probably be pronounced ARK-HIRE-ann) is the highest rank in the Church of Anandaat, comparable to the Pope of the Catholic Church.
In the year 999, the Arch-Hieran is Jaccoria Cordalei, an Aasimar who really makes a big deal out of the whole ooh-I-have-wings, I-bring-the-light thing. She is known to be elderly, and also known to have been passed over for the Arch-Hieran position on a couple different Arch-Hieran elections, having the reputation of a sort of non-entity among religious circles. She does not have a particularly zealous reputation among religious circles.
Appointment
The Arch-Hieran is chosen by majority vote of the The Hieranic Council and traditionally is chosen either out of their ranks or out of the sub-hierans in charge of individual cities.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The Arch-Hieran can be removed by either death or by unanimous vote of the Hieranic Council. This, in actual practice, has previously been accomplished in times of political instability by the deaths of dissenting members of the Hieranic Council.
