Branwen von Zarovich
Branwen von Zarovich- Zima
The mother of Strahd, Branwen was a noblewoman in Svitar who wed Count Barov. She was born in the valley that would one day bear her husband's name, and spent her childhood in that sleepy, sunny valley. She was a melancholy and morose woman even before her marriage, and became even more so afterwards. She openly mourned the "loss" of her elder two sons to the military at a young age, and struggled to relate to them after they began fighting and warring in the name of their country and god. When she had her youngest son, she finally put her foot down and refused to allow Barov to enlist him in the military. Sergei was sheltered from such matters and kept close to his mother's side. She insisted he instead focus his attention to academic matters, and pushed him towards a more religious calling.
Aside from her melancholy, Branwen was known for two things: her love of birds and her fervent faith. She was not violently zealous as her husband, but Strahd remembers her often sitting in a sunny window and praying until she was breathless.
What little joy Branwen had in her life came from her youngest son, and from black birds. She was extremely fond of ravens and crows, and adored taking trips back to her birthplace where the birds were abundant.
