Ruby Island
Ruby Island is a small, rugged island located off the coast of a peninsula in the nearby mountain range. The island is approximately 25 square miles in size, with rocky cliffs that rise steeply from the ocean. The terrain is rough and hilly, covered in dense forests and overgrown fields that have reclaimed much of the abandoned mining infrastructure.
Despite its isolation and difficult living conditions, the village of Redwater, which is home to approximately 200 people, seems to be a relatively peaceful place, with no recent reports of conflict or danger. The villagers have built their homes from local materials, using stone, timber, and thatch, with few decorations or embellishments. A small market in the village center provides basic supplies, such as food, water, and tools. A blacksmith, carpenter, and healer also work in the village, providing necessary services to the community.
Redwater's economy was once centered around the ruby mines that dotted the island. The mines produced high-quality rubies that were highly sought after by the wealthy and powerful. However, the mines eventually ran dry, and the miners moved on to more prosperous regions. Redwater was left with little to sustain itself, and the villagers struggled to eke out a living from the harsh and isolated land.
The island is surrounded by rough waters, and storms can often make landing even more treacherous. However, there are a few small coves and beaches scattered around the island's perimeter that can be used as landing spots. The waters around the island are also rich in fish and other sea life, making it an important source of food for the villagers.
The interior of the island is rugged and rocky, with steep hills that rise up from the shoreline. There are few trees on the island, and the soil is thin and rocky, making it difficult to grow crops or sustain any kind of agriculture. The abandoned ruby mines are said to hold valuable gems, and rumors persist of a great dragon that lives deep within the mines, guarding its treasures from any who would dare to enter. Though the villagers of Redwater seem unfazed by the dragon's presence, outsiders may be wise to exercise caution.
