The Federal Military

Like most other Nations of the Circle, the Federation has a relatively small military relative to the size of its territory and population. The minimal militaries of Co9 nations are standard both as representations of the nations' commitment to international peace, but also because the Circle of Nine explicitly designated the Solisvaran Royal Defense Force as the official military of the Circle of Nine. Though its military is small for a nation of its size, the Federal Military than that of any Co9 nation other than Solisvar.

Leadership

The Federal Military is under the command of the Federal Department of Defense. One legion's imperator, chosen by the consul of the Department of Defense, serves as the Imperator General of the Federal Military, a position with the authority to direct the actions of the rest of the military. The Imperator General interfaces with the consul of the Department of Defense to relay information and instructions back and forth between the Federal Military, the the Council, the Magelord, and now the New Federal Committee. Recently-appointed consul of the Department of Defense Raythe Blackhand has not yet selected his Imperator General; the previous Imperator General perished in the destruction of Vay Proper.

Organization

The Federal Army is divided into the following units:   A centuria is a unit of 100, of which typically 85 are soldiers and 15 are auxiliary support personnel, including engineers, cooks, medics, and scouts. Each is led by a centurion.   A cohort is a unit composed of 5 centuriae, or about 500 individuals. Each is led by a tribune.   A legion is a unit composed of 10 cohorts, or about 5,000 individuals. Each is led in the field by a legate and directed remotely by an imperator, a high-level tactician.

Legions

Prior to the Severing, the Federation had 20 active legions. After the Severing, 15 remained, though many of them were poorly supplied and barely in contact with their chain of command. After the destruction of Vay Proper by the arrival of the God Machine, that number has been reduced to 11, primarily those that were garrisoned around AuriaCaelus, and Cethandir. The remaining 11 are briefly described here. Two defected to New Xalotl following the secession of Caelus.   Aurian I “Omen”. Garrisoned in rural northeastern Auria.   Aurian II “Ranger”. Garrisoned in rural eastern Auria.   Aurian IV “Guardian”. Garrisoned in rural southeastern Auria.   Capital VII “Homeland”. Garrisoned at Fort Arch, a military base about 200 miles northeast of Vay Proper. Due to its relative distance from Vay Proper, Capital Legion VII was the only legion from Vay Proper to survive the capital’s destruction.   Caelan I “Fidelity”. Caelan Legion I, formerly led by Legate Marius Bérenger faced the army of New Xalotl at the Wildwood Site and surrendered after the death of Legate Bérenger. Caelan Legion I has since defected to New Xalotl.   Caelan II “Nighthawk”. Caelan Legion II defected to New Xalotl.   Caelan III “Monument”. After Caelus joined New Xalotl, Caelan Legion III left Caelus and retreated to Fort Arch near Vay Proper.   Cethandiran I “Dominion”. Garrisoned in rural western Cethandir.   Cethandiran II “Victory”. Garrisoned in rural southeastern Cethandir.   Cethandiran V “Sleepwalker”. Garrisoned about 50 miles outside of Cethandir.   Cethandiran VI “Leviathan”. Garrisoned in rural eastern Cethandir.

The Vanguard Veterans' Voluntary Militia

The Vanguard Veterans' Voluntary Militia (abbreviated V3M) was organized by Serenity of Yennenar, a tiefling who was the captain of the first liberated Project Vanguard squadron. Since its formation, 162 ex-Vanguard agents (about 65% of those liberated from Vanguard) have signed on to participate in the V3M. Many see it as a way to continue living the only lifestyle they know, while maintaining their newfound freedom and supporting the regime that liberated them. The V3M has consolidated into 4 companies of about 40 soldiers, each led by a captain, and Serenity of Yennenar serves as the Major General.   In early 718, the New Federal Committee voted unanimously to make the V3M into a branch of the Federal Military, entitling V3M members to the same compensation as elite Federal Army soldiers.
