Amaro
Amaro , The Tinkerer
Amaro is a rock Gnome and member of the Milagonian Artificers Guild. He specialises in creating magical ballistae and was recruited to the Obliviati by Clavis Interitus to develop and experiment with Sinan Thune’s mechano-magical designs. For his part, Amaro was keen to take on this assignment as he felt stifled by the Guild’s many rules and limitations. Eager to break free from these constraints, he has fervently set about his work developing new mechanical monstrosities within the mechanical workshop hidden behind Il Precipizio.
Amaro oversaw the construction of Sinan’s electromagnetic trap room and is responsible for its upkeep. Recently he has been working on a mechanoid scorpion equipped with a lightning stinger, which he has dubbed a Scaladar. He is assisted in his work by Mickey; an obedient flesh golem constructed from parts of various fiends who handles most of the heavy lifting. Amaro receives deliveries of new materials from a permanent teleportation circle, which was relocated in its entirety from Clavis Interitus’ personal abode following a suspected break-in. He also makes use of the many rare and precious gemstones that are discovered by tamed Xorn who aid in the excavation of Mount Nidofuoco, infusing the gems with arcane energy to create power crystals. All waste products and failed experiments are disposed into a pit which holds a sphere of annihilation.
Amaro is hesitant to engage the characters directly as he is outnumbered. If he can keep them talking for a little while he can psychically link with the Scaladar and use it to attack. If reduced to half of his maximum hit points, Amaro flees. If the Scaladar rolls a 1 on any attack roll, ability check or saving throw, it malfunctions and is considered stunned for one round. Amaro carries one superior healing potion, a set of small silver keys, a small silver necklace of a tiny egg worth 100 GP and a headband of Scaladar control (requires attunement). The silver egg is used to access the Obliviati’s treasure chests. Amaro wields an ambulatory force cannon that normally sits on his shoulder (Predator style). It is a prototype and is thus highly unstable.
As he has worked closely with Clavis Interitus, he knows more about the mage’s experiments than any other member of the Obliviati in Milagon. Although he would not be able to replicate any of the arcane research on necromancy or demonology, his intelligence and training in the arcane means he understands many of the theoretical principles involved. He also knows about the clockwork dragon being constructed within the volcanic chamber and may part with this information as part of any interrogation if he feels he can save his own skin.
Amaro is interested in pursuing his own revolutionary, yet disturbing research away from the limitations of the Artificer’s Guild. His goals coincide with those of the Obliviati, but he has no true loyalty to them.
Amaro was responsible for the destruction of Jed’s newly acquired Gazer familiar, Cally the Gazer. As the tiny aberration was exploring the corridor leading to the mechanical workshop, Amaro spied it from the corner of his eye and used his force cannon to disintegrate the creature. Amaro was able to get his Scaladar creation up and running, but to was destroyed by the Thanes of Order and Amaro was mercilessly killed. Whilst investigating his body, Jed touched something he shouldn’t have (natural 1) and the unstable force cannon exploded, obliterating much of the loot the Gnome carried.
