Clavis Interitus

Unknown (a.k.a. Clavis Interitus)

A dark, hooded figure who speaks in soft whispers and whose face is covered by the grinning caricature of a Paraganese mask. Clavis is a 17th level wizard of the enchantment school.

Clavis has spent most of his life researching the demons of the abyss, from the lowliest dretch to the apocalyptic demon princes. Thanks to the Obliviati’s resources, he has managed to amass a deal of knowledge around Orcus, the demon prince of the undead and has added several necromancy spells to his repertoire. The party have been trailing Clavis since Tal’Anor will first encounter him beneath the Temple of the Triple Goddess as he attempts to follow his research toward a powerful demonic artefact known as the Wand of Jubilex.

In addition to overseeing the organisation’s operations within Milagon and the construction of Il Precipizio, Clavis had secretly been performing his own arcane experiments and excavating the volcanic rock around Mount Nidofuoco in search of valuable gemstones and rare material components.

Having received Sinan Thune’s designs and specifications for mechanical monstrosities, Clavis used Geas to enslave two fire giants into building an improved version of Sinan’s clockwork dragon, complete with a breath weapon that can rotate through several different damage types. He intended to have this creation spring forth from the volcano and terrify the city when the demonic invasion begins. To build upon Sinan’s designs he has recruited a prominent gnomish artificer by the name of Amaro. This plan was foiled when it was destroyed by the Thanes of Order.

In his own experiments, Clavis began to combine the different elements of his own research with the works of others. For example, he has combined his demonic research with some of Sinan’s work and a manual of flesh golems to create Mickey; a flesh golem made from parts of various fiends, stitched together and fitted with a tank that can produce a poisonous cloud. With these first steps he hopes to discover a means to artificially control powerful demonic entities, turning them into little more than obedient drones.

As a means of spreading more chaos and terror, Clavis has resurrected the despicable writings of Kyuss, an ancient high priest who may have transformed himself into the living nightmare known as the ‘Worm that Walks’. By magically altering rot grubs and inserting them within cadavers, Clavis has recreated the Spawn of Kyuss, a form of undead animated by writhing worms that can burrow into humanoids and thus proliferate.

Only the highest echelons of the Oblivati are aware of these sinister machinations. His moniker means ‘key of destruction’ and is not his true name. Little is truly known about him, but he is thought to be some sort of elf and his mask supposedly hides a burned visage.

After meeting the Thanes of Order

In an eventful meeting of the Thanes in the Shrine of Jubilex, Clavis had Atroz sever the arm of Karnak to acquire the Ring of the Storm. He was also able to use one of Karnak’s fingers as a spell focus. Thus, he used scrying on the party to keep tabs on them from their first encounter. He was aware they had an ally in the city, which he cannot see with divination. After questioning the members of the Obliviati who fled Mitzu, he has incorrectly concluded that this is the party’s wizard ally Shinsuke, when in fact it is Count Monsterrat de Cisne.

Later, he would also observe the party within the mysterious tower in Levetta, fighting a fearsome beholder. His interest piqued, Clavis teleported himself and two vrock demons to their location (a risky manoeuvre as he was only casually familiar with their precise location), but the risk paid dividends. Exhausted from their battle with the beholder, the party fled, allowing Clavis to search the wizard’s tower at his own leisure and uncover more of its secrets.

Clavis created a simulacrum of himself by decoding the spell within his newly acquired spell book in combination with snow and ice, sprinkled with powdered ruby from the mining excavations behind Il Precipizio. This simulacrum took on the day-to-day running of the Obliviati within Paragan, allowing to him retreat to the shadows and plan for the coming invasion. The simulacrum
he lured the party to the Precipice by returning the Ring of Obfuscation and then attempted to negotiate for the Wand of Jubilex in return for the Ring of the Storm. The party did not comply and combat ensued. He retreated to the volcanic chamber and the party pursued, eventually destroying the him in addition to killing his sorcerer lieutenant Sgradito and trashing the newly constructed clockwork dragon. Clavis has begrudgingly accepted this loss, but the party assume their foe is vanquished.
Thanks to Clavis, a portal to the Abyss was successfully opened using the gate spell. Unable to remain in Milagon to help, the Thanes, except Petryan fled toward the The Spice Islands.

Motivation

Clavis shares some of the Obliviati’s goals, but he is ultimately using their organisation for his own ends. That is not to say that he does not do his job well. It was Clavis who thought to position the Obliviati as a bona fide minor religion within Milagon and to recruit from the downtrodden and dissatisfied members of society to amass a loyal, but gullible following that verges on the fanatic. At their behest he has also started the process of transforming those followers he considers to be dead weight into Slaad.
