Xanfovos
Xanfovos, the Lord of Dread
Thought to be the stuff of legend, it seems that the Lord of Dread had resurfaced near the mountain town of Levetta with an army of orcs at his command.
What was known by the people of Levetta about the Lord of Dread:
His coming has been accompanied by the appearance of a mysterious tower, as well as strange occurrences in the surrounding area. What possible interest he could have in the place, no-one knows. Something powerful and long hidden, no doubt.
It turns out, Xanfovos is a beholder who has been attracted by tales of an ancient Wizard who used this tower as his home while he researched dragons in an effort to bend them to his will. He is used the attack on Levetta as a smokescreen while investigating the wizard’s Tower and tries to uncover its lost secrets. In carving its way through the mountain and into the tower using its disintegration ray, Xanfovos broke the spell of invisibility keeping the tower hidden. Its extended presence has begun to warp reality around the tower as it gradually transforms the location into its lair.
After a harrowing battle, Xanfovos was defeated and his body smashed into thousands of icy pieces. As such, it was unable to be later raised as a beholder zombie by Clavis’ necromancy.
- Said to be a powerful spellcaster
- No-one has seen their face and lived
- Thrilled by terrifying their foes before conquering them
- Accompanied by a legion of savage warriors (normally orcs, but sometimes goblinoids or gnolls)
- Would sometimes turn his victims to stone, preserving their terrified expressions. This is where the term ‘petrify’ stems from with regards to being afraid.
