Christoph Heulen
A façade of calm bemusement and irreverence conceals one of the greatest minds of the modern age, though he has seen many a "modern" age at this point in his lifespan. Despite his youthful looks, Christoph boasts a longevity that outstrips even most elves. He has achieved this through a series of magical processes and safeguards that keep his literal old soul within a healthy body.
It's not that he wishes to live eternally, per se; rather, he believes there is simply far to much to learn to fit into one meager human life time.
During his lengthy tenure, Christoph has dabbled in countless schools and concentrations of magic. He began as a student of the transmutation school, but has extensive knowledge in conjuration, alchemy, draconology, and crafting magic items. He steeps himself in arcane studies and practice in the seclusion of his White Tower, a mountain fortress far away from the petty distractions of mundane life. Despite his disdain for the day-to-day drudgeries of mortal life, he still needs to eat (in addition to paying for the often exorbitantly expensive crafting components he requires for his work) and thus pulls in an impressive income through a number of "houses of arcane wonders" that he has established across Kentro. Ostensibly, each of these shops is its own, singular entity with its own proprietor, but this is a fabrication to avoid unwanted noteriety; each "store" is merely a housing unit for Christoph's magnum opus, the Multi-dimensional Access Door (or MAD, for short), thank links each shop to the White Tower where he maintains a small team of apprentices and crafters.
While it cannot be certain how old Christoph is biologically (he spent much of his early career studying "chronomancy" and areas of time dilation like the Feywild), it is clear that his long life has led to a certain detachment from his fellow man. He no longer sees the little picture; only a grand tapestry weaving before him. He has a vested interest in ensuring the continuation of life as a whole, but cares little for the individual threads that comprise it. One could easily say his eternal youth has made him egotistical and arrogant; it is difficult for him to take seriously the words of most of his fellow mortals who only have a mere fraction of the life experience he has.
He has lived countless of lives and been with a host of romantic partners. Through it all, he has only had a handful of constant relationships that have managed to keep pace with his longevity. One is his long-time friend Aefaren, an elf of Aeturnum and fellow wizard. The other is the immortal spirit of the dragon Rahnorok, whom he freed from the confines of an orb of dragonkind. While he often believes himself to be the smartest guy in the room, he has a fondness for the artificers and craftsmen of the gnomish peoples and the wisdom of druids and other stewards of the natural world.
Paradoxically, he in many ways still considers himself little more than an apprentice when faced with the seemingly infinite knowledge still to be gleaned from the world around him.
Big M.A.D.
The Multi-dimensional Access Door is easily Christoph's greatest invention. The system links a central hub located in the White Tower to a network of other doors scattered across the continent. So far, he has added close to a dozen doors to the network, but its upward limit is potentially infinite. The system works similarly to a teleportation circle but is less cumbersome in that unique sigil systems are not required and more elegant in that the central hub can control which doors are active at any given time; reverting an external MAD access point to a mundane door to nothing to any Christoph does not wish to enter. Recently, he was able to connect MAD with the re-activated Nexus of Antecea's time. With this, the potential for near-instantaneous travel for the wizard and his allies has increased exponentially. Conceivably, this network could allow anyone travelling it to reach anywhere on Archaios in under a day of travel. The Future and Beyond
For a time after The Extinction War, it seemed Christoph and Emperor Aurum Fortis III were going to unite the world under their own banner. However, The Nexus was a vital component for their plans, and with its destruction and the prohibitive costs of Reconstruction, their ambitions wilted on the vine. Shortly after Aurum abdicated in favor of his daughter, Christoph stepped away from the public eye. What he has been up to since then, or what ultimately became of him, is unknown. As of 1590, the name Christoph Heulen is a name relegated to the history books; holding little meaning to those outside the world of academia and the arcane.Experiments and Studies
When he's not busy coordinating the world's best chance of surviving the Extinction War, Christoph is engaged in a number of esoteric, and likely dangerous, magical studies and experiments.- The Potion of Dragon's Mastery. Thanks to his relationship with Rahnorok, Christoph has learned a great deal about the nature of dragons and their relatives. He has spent the past few years attempting to distill their essence into a consumable potion. He's close to a finished prototype, but there are still a few preventative factors to be worked out before a test-subject should consume it.
- Dragonbone Golem-crafting. Not one to waste materials, Christoph was able to fashion the skeleton of a dragon into his own personal sentry that tirelessly and ceaselessly watches over his laboratory. The fact that it is the skeleton of a blue dragon, which Rahnorok was in life, is likely just a coincidence.
- Blackrazor. Somewhere along the lines, Christoph came into possession of one of the most infamous sentient blades ever created. The blade hungers for the souls of its victims and is imbued with a malevolent spirit of the Shadowfell. The "conversations" Christoph has had with the blade have filled volumes, but he has yet deigned to share his findings.
- The Axe of the Dwarvish Lords. The premiere artifact of the ancient dwarves recently fell into Christoph's possession when an intrepid group of adventurers recovered it, along with their intended prize of a chunk of soul stone, from the collection of the reclusive beholder-wizard Ralakor. Initially, the party's lizardfolk barbarian attempted to wield it as his new weapon, but found the side effects (namely, the blade slowly turning him into a dwarf) not to his liking, and handed it over to Christoph for study.
