Zel

Power Arises

Zel was born in a tribe in the swamp. His tribe was concerned because he was the one and only lizardfolk that was born with red scales. In his tribe, when lizardfolk reach adulthood, the men go through a trial of passage where they hunt a giant constrictor snake. Zel was treated differently, being born with red scales, so he knew this was his moment to prove to his tribe that he was not weak. Zel had a friend that was doing the same right of passage and so they ventured out together.   Soon, they both found a giant snake and slayed it. Zel's friend landed the killing blow and they both celebrated. However a moment of silence fell as they both realized that only one would move on, and it quickly turned from friendly to hostile.   During the duel with his friend, Zel didn't feel like himself. He felt happy; excited almost as he was fighting and slashing at his friend. It felt like something inside of Zel was screaming to fight and kill the person before him. Zel listened to the voice and killed his friend, as he did, he soon realized that he killed his only friend and was stricken with grief. Returning, he passed the trial but told them that he also dueled his friend to the death.   This changed Zel's part in the tribe. They viewed Zel even more differently now, it was more so a fear after seeing him hunt and how his personality changes as he fights. His tribesmen soon believed that because of his brutality in hunting and killing his enemies, as well as smiling and sometimes laughing while killing, Some believe that the spirit of a red dragon lived within Zel or he is the reincarnation of one. Soon though, Zel left to pursue greater strength throughout the land; to become stronger so that nothing will stand in his way.

Power Found

Zel's adventures from the cold K'Qall swamps and out and across The Province of Horizon earned him great renown. He went from a small-time adventuring group escorting a messenger raven back to its family to a mercenary hired to provide additional defense for King Dorian of Crucible, to a member of another adventuring party that would combat Cataclysm himself. Through it all, Zel was driven by a singular focus: find the most powerful beings in the land, and kill them.   Travelling with the party allowed him to do just that: fighting monsters, dragons, devils, and even gods. During their travels, Zel even discovered the source of his dragon-like aggression. It was revealed that his red scales were the result of his carrying of a fragment of the soul of the red dragon, Yolgorah. This soul fragment has been passed along for generations after the dragon and its cult were defeated in a pitched battle between a splinter group of the dragon's cult and those who remained loyal.   Initially, Zel's party dissuaded him from returning the soul fragment to the slumbering dragon, thus preventing it from awakening. But later, Zel would return with the assistance of Venatrix to return the soul and receive strength from the awakened dragon in return. Unknowingly, Zel set free what would become a powerful ally in Cataclym's conquest of the mortal realm.   Zel's allegiances have always been fickle, as the ambitious lizardfolk seems willing to ally himself with whomever seems the most likely to increase his strength. For now, Zel sees Cataclysm as the ultimate challenge to master, but it cannot be known what he will do or where he will go next should the Fundamental Avatar be defeated. During his adventures, there has been only one thing that has distracted Zel from his pursuit of power: the love of a human warrior called Ysbetta Sentilla. In time, it seemed that Zel's urge to build a family wion out over his urge to achieve greater and greater power. He and Ysbetta would go on to adopt and raise countless children of many, many backgrounds. Throughout his life, they would continue to strike out on adventures in search of worthy foes to fell.    Eventually, long into his twilight years, Zel finally met his match in battle against a clutchmate of Yolgorah. It was a fierce battle, and even though the dragon was the one to ultimately walk away, it did so with far fewer pieces than it entered the fray with. It is said the dragon even fled Archaios afterwards as the shame of being the "one-horned, three-footed dragon" was too much to bear...
