“Maybe.” But don’t count on it. I eyed the turret twins. “Lovelace as in Ada Lovelace?”
Rin smiled shyly. “Yes. And Hopper as in Grace Hopper. They’re both nerd heroes, too. Hopper was a Rear Admiral and one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I in the 1940s, and she popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, which is… ummm… oh, I’m doing it again, aren’t I?”

Rin (Real Name: Lily Yu) was the daughter and only child of the billionaire entrepreneur Charles Yu. Rin was one of the first children to be born and raised within an arcology, a luxurious self-sustaining environmental enclave built in response to the wide-scale devastation of the Second American Civil War. Rin's arcology, Desert Rose I, was a precursor to the Shards which became humankind's only refuge after the HEX Pandemic of 2057.
Life inside the arcology was sheltered in many ways. Rin grew up in a Silicon Valley utopia surrounded by privilege, experiencing only one significant tragedy: the loss of her mother to suicide when she was six years old. Diagnosed with Aspbergers in her early teens, she received extensive tutoring and therapy to better help her integrate her passion for art with a viable career. Intelligent, scholastic, and focused, she self-programmed an interactive Virtual Reality environment to assist elderly people with dementia when she was barely 16. This project earned her a full scholarship at Caltech. She left her home state of Nevada to study Environmental Design and Programming in California.
Despite her young age, Rin excelled at college but struggled with the day to day world of adult life, lacking the ability to cook, clean, or drive. However, she graduated with honors and was accepted into Ryuko's internship program, and graduated from that into a role on the Environmental Design team for Archemi.
When HEX swept the UNAC, Rin was unfortunately susceptible and caught the virus early in the pandemic. Suddenly facing the prospect of certain death, Rin volunteered to join the Archemi full-immersion refugee program. As far as she knows, she is still alive: her father told her that he would put her in suspended animation and take her with him to Golden Shard, the mega-structure arcology serving Nevada, but she does not know if this ever happened or whether her father is even still alive.
Within Archemi, Rin is a talented Artificer specializing in self-operating machines known as machima. While not inclined to combat, she is always protected by a pair of machima sentries, Lovelace and Hopper, and is continuously improving them as she gains levels and learns new abilities. She is talented in a range of crafts, including the creation of weapons and armor, and is capable of tackling most mechanical or magical repairs. At the end of Trial by Fire, she takes the Mystic Engineer Advanced Path.
Rin is both gay and asexual; she is interested in women in a romantic but non-sexual capacity, which largely informed her decision to play an Asa Mercurion. She has found an unlikely partner in Ebisa, the Spymistress and (unofficial) Royal Assassin of the current Vlachian king, Volod Ignas Corvinus II.
