Ado
Freedom from tyranny
Ado is a nation in the Western Continent. It is not a part of the Western Continent mainland, but is instead a series of large islands that lie to the west of Cathay. As an archipelago, it borders no other nations, but is surrounded on all sides by the Dragon Sea. Ado's closest neighbor is Cathay, but the Dragon Kingdom is not far from Ado, and the Golden Khanate lies a good deal further west past the Dragon Sea.
Ado is a series of large islands. As an archipelago, much of the region is divided into small but similar biomes and ecosystems. The lands of Ado are generally temperate except for the few of the northernmost isles which experience longer winters than the rest of the isle. For most of the isles, they will experience the four seasons normally, including ample time to grow local crops, namely rice.
The islands are mostly mountainous, and numerous islands feature dormant volcanoes from which the isles of Ado had spawned. This means the land is generally rocky, and only a relatively small part of the land is actually arable and productive. Regardless of fertility, the land is home to numerous forests, hills, and rivers that feed stretches of plains and coasts on the shores of the islands. Most of the islands are larger with numerous geographical features, but other, often smaller islands are flatter with less features.
The land of Ado is the youngest nation of the Western Continent, both historically and geographically. The island chain was formed by a series of volcanoes which would build up the islands that would be Ado before ultimately going dormant or extinct. As a nation founded by men, its history begins after the Last of the Primordial Wars. Before then, the archipelago was known to exist by the elves, but remained uninhabited due to the Cathanese general misgivings about sea travel.
Following the Last of the Primordial Wars, humanity that was raised among the Romanoran began to spread and proliferate throughout Arda. A small number began to travel west, into the lands of Nestoria and Mujmal, where they settled and built new homes in the developing nations there. The elves of nearby Cathay saw the men, and were not impressed by yet another "gift" of the Heavens, and largely ignored the human expansion in their neighboring nations. Unsurprisingly, it did not take long for the migration of men to come to the border of Cathay.
At this point in time, Cathay was an independent nation following the philosophies of Qiu Fuzi that preached elven supremacy. While other ancestries did live in Cathay, they had no political power or office, living lives as serfs and slaves. The Cathanese had little interest in yet more "inferior" peoples in their domain, and thus turned away human settlers. Such was human nature to be curious of the unknown and forbidden, and many came to build settlements in Cathay illegally. While the Cathanese Legions frequently killed or deported the settlers, men continued to return, being lured hearing the legends of Cathay's wealth and power, but clearly unaware of their policy of elven supremacy.
Thus did the Eight Noble Families of Cathay hatch a new plan to take in the human settlers, but only to reinforce and replace the dwarves and kobolds who had prior been the slaves of the Cathanese elves. The humans who were settled in Cathay were treated no better. They were bid to build their crude barracks to sleep in, and then made to toil in the fields and mines of Cathay in service of the greater lords of Cathay. It did not take long for the men to figure out that they were being used, and attempted to leave. Not willing to lose their new force of slave labor, the Cathanese cut off any attempts of escape, and their official bondage as slaves to the elves began.
Yet, the elves could not stop every attempt of escape. A few such men, forced into slavery on the western coast, knew it would be too difficult to flee to Nestoria or Mujmal. Instead, they stole a ship, boarded their families and followed the rumors of the archipelago to the west of Cathay. In the rocky and stormy Cathay Inland Sea, their venture was doomed to failure. The night was pitch black and rainy, but amidst the storms, the matron of one of the families saw a floating white spirit. Seeing it was her own mother who had perished in bondage, they followed the spirit who guided them safely out of the storm. They found the isles, and settled there, being the first settlers of the new land of Ado. The families swore they would help others find their new haven, and thus did the first Masked Liberators come to be.
Over time, more and more people were rescued from slavery from Cathay, and their numbers continued to swell. Knowing their haven wouldn't last without organization, the families split the land into small fiefdoms which would be overseen by the head of each of the families who arrived on Ado. Thus were each of the fiefdoms of Ado were established, and the heads of each family became the local lords. Leading them would be the first Empress, the matron who guided the ship through the storm.
Since then, the land of Ado would slowly develop into a haven for escaped slaves. Of course it did not evade detection of Cathay forever, and the Cathanese have attempted a number of invasions. However, each invasion effort has been frustrated by numerous issues including bad weather, the Cathanese fear of the sea, and the tenacity of the defenders of Ado. The Adoese still continue to launch stealth missions into Cathay to rescue the non-elves who are oppressed in Cathay.
Ado was largely established as a haven for humanity escaping Cathay, but over time it has also become the home and safe harbor for many more peoples. Men dominate the politics of the region, but there are also minorities of half-elves, dwarves, and kobolds, all of which are frequently enslaved or maltreated by the elven supremacists of Cathay. As more people are rescued from Cathay, the skills and culture of the realm of Ado shifts ever slightly with the influx of new peoples to their island home.
While the people of Ado prefer established order, they do not condone the slavery of their fellow man in the neighboring nation of Cathay. In this regard, the Adoese are often split on their desire of order but also fulfilling their ideals of freedom and fraternity for humanity. Each of the local lords are similarly split, with each deciding on what aspects they can fulfill in maintaining local order while managing and resettling new arrivals brought in by the Liberators.
Outside of their desire to help their fellow man, the Adoese have a vibrant culture focused on their communities. Each individual fiefdom of Ado sees to the needs of its people by establishing general infrastructure such as roads as well as more specific institutions such as schools, temples, or hospitals. The communities come together multiple times a year to celebrate in local festivals, most of which are centered around the ancestral religion of the region. From an early age, the citizens are frequently encouraged to engage in acts of service or kindness to the people of the region, and to any of the newcomers to Ado.
Despite the kindness preached by the people of Ado, this does not extend to elves. With many escaping enslavement from Cathay, most are deeply prejudiced against the elves. Half-elves are realistically as far the grace of Ado can extend, as most Adoese are aware that many half-elves face terrible persecution in Cathay, and even more so they are the result of unwilling unions between elven masters and their human slaves. Elves are generally shunned on Ado, even those not of Cathanese origin. In worst cases, some may even be chased back to their ships.
As for the dwarves and kobolds who are rescued, most will live alongside humans in their communities, bringing their skills in craft to their rescuers. Some have banded together, creating tribes of mountainous kobolds, and Ado is home to the only known active dwarven hold in the Western Continent. In general, these peoples live in harmony with the men of Ado, but some dwarves will leave for the land of Dunlain, where more dwarves live.
Ado is unique in Arda in the sense that it is a land that has largely rejected the traditional religions of the Heavens and the Primordials in favor of more ancestral religions. In these ancestral religions, clerics draw upon the souls of their ancestors to invoke divine aid on their behalf. The Ado have some misgivings about the Heavens and Primordials in causing many of their current difficulties, namely the creation of dragons (who terrorize from the nearby Dragon Kingdom) and the creation of the Cathanese elves, who delight in flaunting their long lives and cruelty by enslaving men and other vulnerable peoples while the elves live in luxury and pleasure.
Despite this, Ado does not have any laws forbidding the worship of the Heavens or Primordials. Thus, these religions are carried on largely by those who are resettled on the islands of Ado. Most peoples will eventually assimilate into the greater culture of Ado, and slowly convert or marry into the ancestor worship practiced by the majority of the Adoese. There are still a number of places where Primordial and Heavens worship are carried, the most famous of them is the Hinokami Onsen, the Firelord's Spring, which is said to cure the wounds of those who bathe in its warm and nourishing waters.
As for magicians, the Adoese do have traditional casters and clerics, but such are in the general minority considering the lack of faith of the Primordial Lords and the Heavens. Thus, the most numerous and powerful casters of Ado are oracles and exorcists known collectively as onmyoji. Their use of spirit-focused magic is generally seen as novel compared to other magicians who channel elemental or divine power.
The government of Ado can best be described as feudal confederacy; a nation ruled by numerous small fiefdoms ruled by a head figure. The head figure of Ado is the Emperor or Empress, from a long dynasty of divinely-inspired leaders. The ruler is supported by numerous military lords who maintain land and status in exchange for military and social service. These nobles form the Council of Lords, which is a convening of all of lords of Ado to meet and discuss the needs of the realm, and what they can do to address the issue. If action is taken, a task force of multiple lords are established to see to the issue. In larger threats, the Emperor will field the entire council and place them under the command of the Imperial Ado Army.
It is not unfair to say that Ado has numerous military forces, which may come as surprise considering it is the smallest of the nations of the Western Continent. In truth, it more fair to say that the Ado have the most military divisions and independent forces than any other nation. This is because each fiefdom possesses a standing army, albeit small, that sees to the needs to of that individual fiefdom. In addition, there is also the Imperial Ado Army, an army made by conscripts from across every fiefdom of Ado. In times of smaller threats, such as a dragon making a nest in their lands, multiple local fiefdoms will field their forces, and perhaps be supported by the Imperial Army. In larger threats, every fief will be mobilized and placed under the banner of the Imperial Army. In order to remain relevant among powerful enemies such as the Dragon Kingdom or Cathay, the Adoese are constantly reviewing and creating new battle tactics and more advanced weaponry to make up the difference. The most recent creation will indeed be an impact across the world; the invention of black powder. While still very primitive, the weapons made by black powder, called fire lances, have been shown to have significant and raw power, even if it takes a long time to load and lacks in accuracy. The fire lances are handheld barrels which are packed with black powder, then long metal spikes. When ignited, the spikes are sent flying into their foes.
Due to Ado's general isolation and lack of nearby trading partners, the Adoese are often self-sufficient, creating an economy that sees to most of their needs. The surrounding Dragon Sea offers a bounty of large fish and opportunities for whaling which can then be salvaged for food, blubber, and ambergris. The Adoese do have numerous mountain ranges from which they can mine metals such as iron or copper, but for metals such as gold, silver, or tin they must trade abroad. In addition, the volcanic regions of the island also produce deposits of sulfur, which can be manufactured into an extremely valuable substance - black powder.
In trading goods abroad, the Adoese take to market their exotic wares including weapons and armor, the alcoholic sake, whale products, black powder, but the most important export is Adoese art and calligraphy, which is seen as novel and valuable in the courts of Dunlain or other lands abroad. In exchange, they buy food, timber, and other manufactured wares that would be hard to produce on their relatively small island domains.
Ado is relatively isolated among the rest of the Western Continent, and among the nations who are closest to them harbor no good intentions for the people of Ado. Their closest neighbors, the Cathanese, are indeed their fiercest and most vocal of their enemies. The peoples of Cathay are staunch elven supremacists, and with Ado containing few elves, it is seen as a nation of rabble and slaves. As a result, Cathay had attempted several invasions of the islands of Ado numerous times, but they had been driven back by natural disaster and the steadfast warriors of the Ado people. In return, the Ado have made it a mission to rescue the oppressed non-elves of Cathay, and the actions of the Liberators further complicate their long-frayed relations.
The next closest neighbor to Ado is the Dragon Kingdom. As a nation of proud and tyrannous dragons, they do not send or entertain envoys for any other reason than receiving tribute. Unsurprisingly, the Ado rarely entertain these dragon's ambitions except in rare instances where they can join forces against Cathay, but such an arrangement is both short-lived and generally unproductive. It is not uncommon for a weak dragon who can't hold territory in the Dragon Kingdom to try to stake out a lair in Ado, but they are frequently dispatched not long after their arrival.
For the rest of Arda, they have attempted to create positive relations, at least for those who are reasonably accessible from their distant island home - primarily Dunlain, the Golden Khanate, and Mujmal. In rare cases, they go on further diplomatic ventures to lands as far as Nestoria or the Golden Mountain. In any of these relationships, the primary goal is the establishment of naval trade routes.

Organizations
- Ado Imperial Army - The primary military of the Ado, made up from conscripts from each fiefdom of the realm. In many cases, they are sent by the Emperor to support the needs of the local lords or face against a larger external threat. Most are skilled pikesmen and archers, but there are also numerous magicians and even new squadrons who make use of the new black powder weapon, the fire lance.
- Council of Lords - Ado is made up of numerous fiefdoms of local military lords. When a threat arises in the realm, these lords meet to discuss what action needs to be taken, if any. This way, each lord is aware of the happenings of the land and fosters a working relationship with otherwise competing lords and fiefdoms.
- The Liberators - An organization technically independent of the government of Ado, they are an organization aimed at the ending of slavery on Arda, chiefly that of the bondage of men in the enemy nation of Cathay. The Liberators make numerous stealth missions to Cathay to rescue willing slaves to join them in Ado, and then resettle them in the lands around their castle stronghold of Iga. In this manner, they rescue human, dwarf, kobold, or even half-elf slaves to return with them. Numerous former slaves join the cause themselves, helping others to escape as they were once helped.
Economy
Due to Ado's general isolation and lack of nearby trading partners, the Adoese are often self-sufficient, creating an economy that sees to most of their needs. The surrounding Dragon Sea offers a bounty of large fish and opportunities for whaling which can then be salvaged for food, blubber, and ambergris. Locations of Interest
- Chitose no Miyako - Better known as Miyako, it is best translated as the "Thousand Year City". Despite the name, the city has really only existed for a few hundred years, but rather is said to reflect the Adoese hope that their city and lands will persevere for a thousand years. From the city of Miyako does the Emperor rule, and holds council with the other lords of Ado. It is a center of trade from the Western Continent to the Golden Lands, and vice-versa.
- Cathay Inland Sea - A relatively small but treacherous sea that lies between Cathay and Ado. The Cathanese have attempted several invasions via the sea, but the Cathanese disdain of the sea and lack of naval forces have doomed every venture. Some superstitious peoples say the sea is protected by a guardian spirit who keeps the Cathanese at bay.
- Hinokami Onsen - Best translated as the "Fire Lord's Spring", it is a series of hot springs that are said to heal wounds and illnesses with its warmth and magics. No, there will not be a hot springs session.
- Iga - The castle and stronghold of the famed Liberators, who launch stealth missions into Cathay with the aim of liberating the non-elven populations of the land from elven oppression. It acts as a garrison and training ground for new recruits. The castle also protects the numerous towns and villages that are populated by peoples the Liberators have resettled.
Trivia
- Ado is loosely-based on the middle to late Japanese "medieval" period, chiefly that of the Sengoku Period into the Tokugawa Shogunate.
- Iga is named after the famed Iga clan who defied the powerful warlord Oda Nobunaga, of whom the popularized legends of "ninjas" are said to derive from.
