Scion test

Modifiers: Some scions, in their search for power and improvement, seek the aid of higher powers or follow a code the scion draws inspiration from. Scions who are endowed by these powers can be more powerful, but are bound by the restrictions of their benefactors or codes.
A scion may only benefit from more than a single instance of each modifier, and may not benefit from both an alignment range and specific alignment modifier.

Modifier Priority Point Cost
Scion follows a benefactor and their obediences -2
Scion must maintain an alignment range (requires benefactor) -2
Scion must maintain a specific alignment -3
Scion follows a code -2
Gain an additional minor feature at Level 1 +5

Benefactors: Benefactors refers to the any number of powerful or higher beings who may empower a scion. For most scions, this means a deity, but could also mean great devotion to a demon, angel, fey, spirit, aberration, or any other powerful creature who could empower the scion. Scions could even be devoted to an ideal such as compassion, loyalty, or greed that could be inspiring to them. In exchange for this power, scions must perform "obediences" - acts of deference to their benefactor or ideal - such as, but not limited to: prayer, good or evil deeds, tithing, or service to a local chapter of your benefactor. For specific obediences, you should speak with your GM to find what form(s) is acceptable for the campaign setting.
Scions who follow a benefactor have a constant aura corresponding to their benefactor's alignment, as per a cleric's Aura.
Alignment: Many benefactors, especially deities, demand their scions maintain a certain alignment or range of alignments to receive the greater share of their power. Scions without benefactors could also use their alignment as proof of their dedication to their ideals or rigid discipline which they draw power from. For those that do have an alignment restriction, it can take one of a few forms:
    • A range of alignments, such as neutral, chaotic, or within 1 step of their benefactor. (requires a benefactor)
    • A specific alignment, such as Lawful Good, True Neutral, or Chaotic Evil

Codes: Some scions draw strength from a specific code or from their belonging to an order of like-minded individuals. These codes and orders could be, but aren't limited to:
    • Belonging to a knightly order
    • Belonging to a druidic circle
    • Following a code of chivalry
    • Vowing not use metal equipment
    • An oath of poverty
    • An oath of non-violenceVowing not to rely on magic or magical equipment

Spellcasting

Upon choosing to be a spellcaster, a scion must first choose whether they will draw their spells from an arcane or divine power source. This will determine which kind of spells the scion will have access to. The number of spells the scion is able to cast and the spell lists available to a scion are also dependent upon what level of casting the scion has chosen. Once the scion have chosen a power source, they must then determine which mental ability score is used for casting their spells (Charisma, Intelligence, or Wisdom), which is used in calculating the difficulty class (DC) for their spells and number of bonus spells.
Quarter Arcane Casting: A scion who casts arcane spells and has full casting are drawn from the bloodrager spell list. The scion's alignment, however, may restrict her from casting certain spells opposed to her moral or ethical beliefs; see Chaotic, Evil, Good, and Lawful Spells. A scion who must prepare their spells (see above) must choose and prepare her spells in advance. A scion who has chosen "cast spells spontaneously" may cast any spell they know without preparing it ahead of time.
Quarter Divine Casting: A scion who casts arcane spells and has full casting are drawn from the ranger or paladin spell list.

To learn, prepare or cast a spell, a scion must have a casting ability (Charisma, Intelligence, Wisdom) score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a scion’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the scion’s casting ability modifier.
Like other spellcasters, a scion can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Their base daily spell allotment is given on Tables: Scion Spells Per Day. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high casting ability (Charisma, Intelligence, Wisdom) score (see Table: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells). Neither arcane nor divine scions suffer spell failure as a result of wearing armor.
Scions with an arcane spell list study or contemplate with their spellbooks, or in contemplation of their benefactor (if chosen). Scions with a divine spell list meditate or pray for their spells. Each scion must choose a time at which she must spend 1 hour each day in quiet contemplation or supplication to regain their daily allotment of spells. Time spent resting has no effect on whether a scion can prepare spells. A scion who must prepare their spells (see above) may prepare and cast any spell they have chosen on their chosen spell list, provided that they can cast spells of that level, but they must choose which spells to prepare during her daily meditation.
Starting Spells: A scion with spellcasting begins play or upon reaching a level to cast spells, gains a spellbook or holy text containing all 0-level spells plus three 1st-level spells of their choice on their chosen spell list. The scion also selects a number of additional 1st-level spells equal to his casting ability modifier to add to the spellbook. At each new scion level, he gains two new spells of any spell level or levels that they can cast (based on his new scion level) for his spellbook or holy text. At any time, a scion who has selected "can learn new spells" can also add spells found in scrolls, holy texts or other spellbooks to their own (see Magic).
Spells Gained at a New Level: Scions perform a certain amount of spell research or prayer between adventures. Each time a character attains a new scion level, he gains two spells of his choice to add to their spellbook or holy text. The two free spells must be of spell levels they can cast.
Chaotic, Evil, Good, and Lawful Spells A scion who has selected an alignment modifier (see above) can’t cast spells of an alignment opposed to their own or their benefactor’s (if she has one). Spells associated with particular alignments are indicated by the chaotic, evil, good, and lawful descriptors in their spell descriptions.

Cantrips or Orisons

Scions who select "Has Cantrips / Orisons" can prepare a number of 0-level spells called cantrips (if an arcane caster) or orisons (if a divine caster) each day, as noted on Tables: Scion Spells Per Day. These spells are cast like any other spell, but they are not expended when cast and may be used again. For scions who cast spontaneously, these spells are cast like any other spell, but they do not consume any slots and may be used again.

Major and Minor Features

Once the scion has allocated their Priority Points, they must then decide the kind of skills befit their past experiences and current aims. Each scion begins play with one major feature and two minor features. These features reflect the skill set of the scion, and many are the same or similar to other classes. These abilities function exactly as their counterparts in other classes unless otherwise noted. These abilities are broken down into four major categories - arcane, divine, martial, and subtlety, or a combination of two of these. A scion may select an ability from any category they meet the prerequisites for. They can also substitute any major feature for a minor one, but not vice-versa. The scion gains an additional minor feature at 5th and 15th level, and an additional major feature at 10th level. In addition, any feature gained past 1st level will be scaled to the scions current level. For example, the scion who gains "Hexes (Major)" at 10th level would gains 6 hexes upon selection of that major feature (one hex at 1st level and one at every even level after), with gaining a new hex as normal at every even level thereafter.
