Au Lac Senate
The Au Lac Senate’s ultimate goal is the perfection of society. They want to protect the people of Au Lac and foster a community of peace and harmony. A society’s values, they contend, are reflected in the laws it creates. Something is good if it is lawful. To the Au Lac government, the highest virtue is a society built on stability and order, and the guild’s elaborate system of laws is structured to prevent wrongdoing first and foremost, even at the expense of certain liberties. The Senate can act as a benevolent proactive force that keeps evildoers in check, but it can also act as an oppressive bureaucratic force that stifles freedom and expression.
The Senate is organized into three columns all managing a different aspect of the realm. They are highly influenced by the teachings of the gods, sometimes to an oppressive level.
Each of the Columns also works in some capacity in the Au Lac Legion, each representing the different needs of a powerful military force. The Lyev Column makes up the largest proportion of the military forces. Utilizing a great number of Clerics and Paladins.
Structure
The Au Lac Senate is supported by three branches, called columns, each led by an arbiter.
The Sova Column consists of judges and the extensive legal apparatus surrounding them. It is tasked with adjudicating and arbitrating the effects of the law. The column employs legal aides, pages, librarians, experts on precedent, advocates for the accused, public prosecutors, and judges. The Sova Column employs a wide range of followers of Tyr, Ioun and Kelemvor.
The Jelenn Column writes and enacts the laws of Au Lac, involving the efforts not just of the designated legislators but also a network of bureaucrats: aides, writers, researchers, lobbyists, clerks, and so on. This branch is made up almost entirely of followers of Ioun, Kelemvor, and Gond.
The Lyev Column enforces the law as Au Lac’s police force. The many-leveled hierarchy of the Lyev Column includes arresters, investigators, officers, and lawmages. The Lyev Column is also venturing into the work of managing surveillance and precognition. This branch is made up of all kinds of followers but most are of Torm, Tyr, and Mystra.
The Au Lac senate is ruled by a reclusive Solar named Sanguinius. The Empyrean is aloof, and stays mostly in his quarters, preferring to keep to himself. His long life has jaded him, and his constant struggles against the evils around him have soured his view on the mortals existence as a whole. However the three arbiters all answer to him, and do their best to see out his wishes.
