Kingdom of Axmund

The Kingdom of Axmund encompasses the west of Aressa from the coast to the Carwold, and the isles of Marholm and Lyholm. The majority of the population is human, with a significant minority of halflings in the northwest and of dwarves in the south.

History

Over five hundred years ago, during the Heoringan Invasion, two coalitions formed among the scattered Aressan tribes to oppose them. In the northwest, the tribes instated an emergency dictatorship, choosing Rinburn I of the Axmund tribe as their leader. He led the united tribes to victory, pushing the Heoringas back until they controlled only a small kingdom in the northeast of Aressa. When the period of dictatorship was over, Rinburn refused to give up his power and declared himself King of the coalition. None opposed him, fearing a civil war that would allow the Heoringas to reconquer them, though many southern tribes left the newly-formed kingdom. Since that time, many kings have slowly expanded the realm until it now controls the western half of Aressa.   Soon after the death of King Rinburn III, the Kingdom of Arcadia began an invasion of the eastern borderlands of Axmund, believing the new king Marburn the Lame to be weak-willed and incompetent. However, Marburn proved more capable and better-prepared than expected, and the war has become an interminable stalemate.
