The Justicars

“Look, making the decision to be a Justicar isn’t all that hard. With a little bit of strength and courage, and an honest sense of justice, just about anyone can become one. What’s truly difficult is remaining a true Justicar. To remain vigilant and just, while not buckling under the temptation to show off one’s power. To willing trade a peaceful, quiet life for a life filled with unexpected, sometimes constant danger. Above all, we must have an unshakeable resolve to stay committed and humble. Otherwise, your power will corrupt you.” - Justicar Commander Rin Trueheart   The Justicars are a branch of the Kingdom of Velant's governmental body, and represent the primary law enforcement within the Kingdom itself. Along with guarding the interests and protecting the people of Velant, Justicars enforce the laws set by the Solidus crown and deal out punishment accordingly. Known punishments for specific infractures are as follows:
  • Theft: 5-7 days incarceration and/or a fine of twice the worth of the stolen goods.
  • Worship of Non-Crown sanctioned figures: 30 days incarceration and a fine of 250 gold.
  • Slavery: 12-20 months incarceration and a fine of 1800 gold.
  • Trespassing: 10 days incarceration and/or fine of 200 gold.
  • Tax Evasion: 5-30 days incarceration and a repossession of property equal to the amount owed.
  • Damage to Private Property: 5-15 days incarceration or a fine of twice the worth of property damaged.
  • Damage to Crown Property: 15-50 days incarceration and a fine of twice the worth of property damaged.
  • Kidnapping: 60 days incarceration and/or a fine of 800 gold.
  • Assault with Intent to Injure: 30 days incarceration and/or a fine of 350 gold.
  • Assault with Intent to Kill: 250 days incarceration and/or a fine of 3,000 gold, or execution.
  • Murder: 8-15 years incarceration, and/or a fine of 6,000 gold, or execution.
  • Treason: Execution, or life imprisonment.
Justicars do not have an intricate ranking system like other institutions on Western Arkos, though each group of Justicars presiding over a section of the Kingdom answers to a Commander. Each Commander answers to the Knight Commander, the head of the Justicar order who has the final say on matters of internal affairs. Each major population center in Velant also has a magistrate; an acting judge that arrested personnel are brought before. The magistrate takes into account the charges by the Justicars against the individual and considers witness testimony and evidence before rendering judgement. Defendants brought before a magistrate are able to defend themselves, or may hire an advocate to speak in their defense. There are some in the Kingdom that advocate for individuals as a profession.
