Ferrousto

Ferrousto, more commonly known as Ferro Shards, appear to contain a strange type of energy that seem to use the mind to tap into the unknown and deeply enigmatic forces and fields that govern the laws of the universe. An Arcanist taps into these Ferrological Fields through physically touching the Ferro Shards and can semi-consciously manipulate them to produce a variety of unexplainable effects, a practise which is also referred to as Ferrology or, more crudely, as Magic. Most Arcanists believe that Ferrological Fields are the stuff of raw chaos. They hold within them all possibilities and no possibilities - unless it is tended and directed by an intelligent mind.
The Ferro Shards range in sizes from about the size of a fingertip to a hand. They are indestructible by almost all forms of damage, only being destroyed by unimaginable heat or the occasional overloading of energy during use, which causes them to start to flicker with strands of deadly green light before exploding with great force.
The Ferro Shards are somewhat rare but scattered all around the world. Sometimes a piercing yellow flame will appear in the sky and strike down to the surface, leaving a crater with shards of the Shards scattered around the nearby landscape. Most Shards however are naturally found imbedded in the Rhysar, the magical beast of Arora, and the almost all Daerhys appear to be entirely coated with the Shards.
Ferro Shards appear to have an intrinsic property that they grow ever stronger the more that are in close proximity, but such concentration of power has been known throughout history to become a great risk, bringing unwanted attention from the Rhysar and even the Siriat (Striders) themselves.
However, the Shards themselves do not produce any magical effects if left to their own devices, and their effects are only seen when living beings interact with them. To this date, not a single magical species has been found without the Ferro Shards playing some part in their physiology. The sentient species of Arora access the power of the Shards simply by touching them, which immediately gives those attuned to magic a sensation of heightened senses and energy. To access their power, a Shard must be physically touched, usually within the hand. However, wearing the Shards as jewellery or weaponry does seem to magnify the power. Some ambitious and possibly paranoid Arcanists even implant the Shards into their bodies, an effect that is usually stronger when around the skull.
