Great Serasian Crusade
God-Emperor Xenophon, ruler of the Seras Empire, vowed to continue the work of his father, Damaris the Conqueror, and "liberate" the Marian Province from the Hadrianic Empire. Xenophon launched a three-pronged assault, with invading forces landing near the cities of Laconis and Nikea, and a third invasion force making an overland crossing through the Neck of the Wyrm, a small strip of land connecting the Marian Province to Serasian lands.
With both Laconis and Nikea under siege, the emperor quickly deployed his legions east, leaving the western reach of the empire vulnerable but reinforcing the badly outnumbered Laconians and Nikeans.
The Laconians and Nikeans, despite years of squabbling, put aside their differences to combine forces and fight the Serasian forces to a stalemate. Once the Hadrianic legions arrived, the three armies were able to dislodge the Serasians, who had over-extended their supply lines, and push them back to the sea. A small band of Laconians, led by their king Ionis IV, intercepted the Serasian force making its way through the Neck of the Wyrm, making a heroic stand and slaughtering thousands of of Serasians before ultimately succumbing to the Serasians' overwhelming numbers.
The Last Stand at the Wyrm, as it is now called, bought the combined armies of the Hadrianc Empire enough time to encircle the invading force and push them back into Serasian territory. The Serasian army, despite its numerical superiority, had been soundly defeated, and God-Emperor Xenophon humiliated. Emperor Ellis, keenly aware of his own losses and his vulnerability to barbarian raids and political agitation in the western part of the empire, decided not to pursue the Serasian forces or capture additional territory, which would require several expensive legions to subdue and control.
A peace treaty was signed after a year of tense negotiation. God-Emperor Xenophon was not required to admit fault for the invasion or pay tribute to the Hadrianic Emperor, in exchange for favorable trade status for goods from the Serasian and Shaolin empires. This treaty remains in place to this day.
