Lorsath Visual Arts (LOR-sath)

Written by orphidor

The Lorsath are extremely fond of creating mosaics. Just as different individuals come together to create a community, the many tesserae of a mosaic combine to make a beautiful image, symbolizing the core values of this semi-aquatic race.

History

While their urge to create has existed in the Lorsath ever since the Age of Balance began, their delve into the art world of the Middle Realm began later than that of most other races. This is because the Lorsath were originally more motivated to work on the foundations of their settlements and their relations with others. They still found their niche soon enough and have only continued to hone their craft to this day.

Execution

While assembling mosaics in place is common, another method Lorsath artists use is assembling the mosaic upside down and backwards atop a piece of canvas. That way, the mosaic can be sealed in place all at once, before which time the artist can make adjustments as needed.   Unlike the Suktu, who use broken items as their tesserae, the Lorsath make use of tesserae made specifically for mosaic work.   Recurring subject matters in Lorsath mosaics are plants, fish, and people. Scenes depicting celebrations and days of worship are common. Each mosaic is usually bordered by a geometric and/or vegetal pattern.

Components and tools

The tesserae are most often made from ceramic or stone. Stone tesserae are usually cut to shape before arriving in the hands of the artist, but ceramic tesserae can sometimes be trimmed to custom shapes from a larger tile by the artist.

Participants

Like many things the Lorsath do, the creation of art is a highly collaborative process. Several different artists are known to collaborate on Lorsath works in order to combine their strengths. Even if someone isn't an artist, they can offer encouragement and support to those who are.
