Wood Elf

Native Wardens of the Wild

Wood elves are the most populous of the elven races. They are the native inhabitants of countless forested regions and perhaps the oldest humanoid race on the material plane. Although their high elf cousins have embraced the growth of large civilization, the culture of wood elves is deep-rooted in ancient tradition. They see themselves as the guardians of the elven forest homes of old. To wood elves, the trappings of civilization, including the mightiest of fortresses or tallest walls, are transient and impermanent things that will eventually be overcome by the long processes of nature. Unfortunately, this attitude mixed with the calm and level-headedness of many wood elves seems condescending to many, which has weakened bonds between wood elves and other races in many areas. Additionally, wood elves can sometimes seem off-putting compared to other Tel-quessir, with a gruff manner that makes them less charismatic, despite their avowed compassion and humility.   Compared with other Tel-quessir, wood elves have a notable disinterest in the arcane arts. To a wood elf, the wizard's spells are little different from the mason's castle walls or the tiller's plow—a means of controlling the natural world, which is contrary to the common ethic of living in harmony with nature rather than trying to dominate it that so many wood elves espouse. In particular, many were drawn to the path of the fighter, the ranger, or the rogue, relying on their natural-born skill to overcome obstacles. Those who are drawn to casting stray from the arcane and take up the mantle of hierophants, preferring to engage with divine and druidic forms of magic.

Wood Elf Ethnicities

Due to the vast population of wood elves in Avalor, it should come to no surprise that there are a handful of ethnicities of wood elves. Some wood elves have adapted   The vast majority of wood elves reside in temperate and tropical climates. Their skin tends to be copperish in hue, sometimes with traces of green. Their hair tends toward browns and blacks, but it is occasionally blond or copper-colored. Their eyes are green, brown, or hazel. These elves are referred to as wild elves, green elves, forest elves, or simply wood elves.   Some wood elves have adapted to more polar climates. Snow elves have pale skin and white, blonde, brown, or black hair. They typically have brown or orange eyes. Snow elves are notable for having droopy faun-like ears with fluffy edges.   Pallid elves are often considered close ancestors of wood elves whose habitation in the Darkgrove and connection to the Moonweaver shifted them from a mere ethnicity into a new subrace entirely.
