The Deathwatch

Current Month: Julwar 2nd: 209, The Fifth Age
The Deathwatch Guard are the elite personal guards to the Shin Emperor. They are made up of both men and Vanir Gardeners. The humans are Gāo Nú and are the private property of the Empress. If the person the Deathwatch Guard is protecting dies, the remaining human guards are executed. For those who are chosen to join the Guard, protection of the Emperor and his famiy becomes their sole purpose for living, and members are expected to willingly give their lives if circumstances require it. Only those who are very important are attended by Deathwatch Guards.   Their armor is lacquered red and green, the latter so dark that it is commonly thought of as black. Ranks in the Deathwatch stand a half step above those in the Ever Victorious Army.

Structure

Individual members of the Imperial Family have their own personal contingents of Deathwatch Guards, headed by a leader. The Emperor is always personally protected by at least 500 human members and 2 dozen Vanir Gardeners. Within the Emperor's personal bodyguard, the Gardeners are led by an individual who holds the rank of First Gardener.

History

The Deathwatch has only ever had one desertion in its entire history. The Guardsman named Jyan, had a trigger event a few years before the Second Fall, and became a Twin Souled. He fled Alantris, and journeyed to Refuge where he participated in many events of the late Fourth Age. Adopting the name "Sam" based on a comment from Orsick the Warbringer, he personally slayed many Sundered and Sundered-Clasts. However, during the second battle of Refuge, a Ti assassin murdered him during the final events of the apocalypse.
