The Leviathan of the West

The Melentine Ocean is not so vast as some might think. In fact, should one attempt a straight crossing, they could travel from western Tremalking to eastern Alantris in two weeks. However, only a foolish few attempt this journey, and this is due to the Leviathan of the West.
A creature of gargantuan size, its jaws are wide enough to swallow a galleon whole, its hide so thick cannon fire leaves only scant scratches.
No one knows its true size, for no one has seen it in its entirety. Only that it is intelligent, deadly, and can appear anywhere on the Melentine. The one known weakness all sailors know about the Leviathan is that it avoids shallow waters.
While the Leviathan may be a bane to most sailors, it is also a blessing. Without the Leviathan, surely the The Dread Empire in Far Alantris would have invaded Tremalking from the West, throwing the continent into a gruesome world war.
