Tremalking (Tre-Mall-King)
Current Month: Julwar 2nd: 209, The Fifth Age
Tremalking is the great western continent of the World of Azure.
So named from the old Tremalking Empire word for "Fork", a tremalk, due to its fork like shape, It is the region where most of the realms of Men and Dwarves are based and is usually defined as the area west of the Acean, Sargasso, and South Seas, east of the Melentine Ocean, north of the @Meridiem Circle, and south of the Septon Circle.
The isle of Alber lies off the coast of Tremalking, it is neither a part of the continent or entirely separate from it.
Tremalking is home to the realms of Avonland, Emprese du Marjolais, the New Melentine Empire, the Aurumfels, Burundy, Iberia, Valonbray, Senderfall, Arboraang, Galvinor, Vercinia, Mettenheim, Alber, the independent Holy City of Refuge in the The Plain of Fear , the Jungles of Old Landis, the uninhabited Dead Lands, the lawless expanses of the Vaskery Wilds, The Western Dales, and the Soutlands, as well as the vast majority of the Dwarven city-states known as Marches.
In the The First Age, before the rise of Men, Tremalking was used by the creators as a testing ground for their creations, experimenting on forms and wills before sending them out into the world, the last remnants of this time is the Plain of Fear, where the new gods experiment to this day.
Men were created in the second age, though not much is know about this time. History wasnt truely recorded until after events knwon as the Fall, now known as the First Fall to modern records. The Vanir giants descende from the heavens and taught man much, before being betrayed by their charges. using their now stolen power, the forged a great empire called Tremalking, and created many of the races known today, collectively referred to as Weapons Races. it as around this time that the Elves first arrived on Azure, first landing on Midway in their darkships, then expanding to the other continents, establishing their enclaves and princedoms in the deeps of the forests and woods of the world.
After the Empire's fall, the land fragmented into many warring states that fought each other and the uncountable hordes of Scranc that threatened to devour Humankind. Once their numbers were brought to manageable levels, many of these nations began to empire build. That is, Until the The Second Apocalypse. Many of the nations of the Fifth age are spiritual successors of those empires and Kingdoms, though many new nations emerged inspired by new ideas and beliefs.
The different states of Tremalking are rarely allied, and although relations between the various realms generally tend to be cordial, they have been known to go to war against each other. While there are interstate rivalries over such things as trade and natural resources, which have often proved a great source of wealth for some Tremalkers, the near-constant threats to life that exist in this region make working together an occasional necessity.
Tremalking has been invaded many times over the years: barbarian hordes from the Wilds to the north and south, Serkland incursions from the east, civilizations from The Ways attack from their underground lairs, unrelenting armies of the Undead from the Dead Lands, and large scale raids by Chromatic Dragon armies have all threatened to destroy one or all of the realms of Men.
However, Human lives are relatively short, and over the generations the memories of these events fade into myth and legend, and they become nothing more than stories to scare children at bedtime.
The one thing that unites most Tremalkers is their faith in the divine; whether you're from the righteous lands of Marjolais, or a Melentiner who only pays lip service, all follow the tenets and overarching laws of the Refuge.
Many trade routes have been established to the far continents; silks and spices from Far Alantris, rubber and salt from Midway, and many other exotic wonders and foods often find their way to Tremalking markets.
Though the journey can be long and dangerous, the profits for traders can be substantial and lifechanging.
