Personal history
Nicholas always enjoyed the finer things in life. Good wine, good company, and adventure were always his passions, and when the idea of settling down, giving up his lifestyle of magical investigation and intrigue and starting a family, came up, he'd simply scoff. The idea that any person could hold his attention for more than a fleeting encounter was laughable. That was, until he met Adelade.
It was just meant to be another case, some necromancer had been messing around with the local cemetery and he'd been asked to stop it. Easy enough, but when he found out that the necromancer in question had been siphoning magic of the void via his own daughter, it got a lot more complicated.
One daring escapade later, the fabulous Enigma had defeated the necromancer, and freed the daughter of his tyrannical grasp, the pair forming a quick connection over the course of the adventure. Impressed by her power (among other things), and less-than-keen to abandon Adelade to figure things out for herself now that her father had gone, Nicholas offered her a place as his partner, which she gratefully accepted, and the two began travelling together.
It didn't take long for a strong bond to form between the two, she was fun and a little edgy in a way that kept Nicholas enraptured, and after a year or so of travelling together, he proposed and the two were married.
They proved themselves to be quite the dynamic duo as far as arcane investigators go, solving many difficult cases together and eventually building their own wizards' tower. Of course, neither wanted to give up the fun and adventure, so they decided to let it fly, becoming their mobile base of operations as they continued their work.
Nicholas was astonished that with every passing year, he found himself more and more in love with Addie, indulging himself in the disgusting commitment he'd so avoided up until that point, and at no point was that more apparent than when her father returned to their lives, wanting to reclaim her and the power of the void contained within her.
With Adelade recaptured and her father's power growing by the minute, Nicholas was placed in an impossible situation and chose to act. Firing a blast of arcane energy at the void siphon, he managed to stop the necromancer from draining away the connection that fuelled Adelade's own life force, but in doing so caused an explosion that took both his life and that of the necromancer.
Nicholas had always said he was living a romantic life, and what way could a romantic hero's story come to end other than a grand sacrifice to save the love of his life?

Much of Nicholas' learning was at the foot of his adoptive mother Phoebe. A firm believer in experiential learning, she taught him everything she could about both magic and, of course, style as a fairly powerful glamour mage in her own right. She is where Nicholas got his adventurous spirit and taught him much about the power of illusions and transmutations, encouraging him to take the latter as his own specialty, but never forgetting to add some of his mother's flare to his spellcasting.

Family Ties
Nicholas' most important family tie is to his wife, Adelade. In her he found his soulmate and would've given up his debauched and adventurous life altogether had she asked. Luckily for him, she was a little freaky too.
A close second however is his adoptive mother Phoebe, a powerful glamour mage. Having adopted Nicholas at a young age, for most of his life she was his only role model and throughout his career he aimed to instil into his every spell a little bit of his mother's style.
