Rani Farooq (a.k.a. Pancake Queen)

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Known to some as ‘The Pancake Queen’, Rani grew up in the hostel that her mother owns and runs near The Railyard in Bathala City. Her father had sadly passed away when Rani was only 5 years old, and while the rest of the family did support them, it often felt like it was just her and her mother against the world.   At age 12, Rani reched out  to a moody-looking teenager who rented a room in the hostel for a while, breaking the ice with a stack of syrup-laden pancakes. There was something about the teen that intrigued Rani, and she was ecstatic when they asked to make pancakes together with her sometime.   Shortly after her thirteenth birthday, Rani found herself kidnapped by her maths teacher. She was thankfully rescued by Blue and Rue before she could be sold on, the latter revealing their powers to Rani in the process and opening up about their past as well as their current employment for The Spider. The whole ordeal left Rani shaken, and the subsequent years saw her going to a therapist to work through her feelings of mistrust and personal betrayal.   From a young age, Rani was more interested in creative endeavours than academic achievements and she was frequently caught doodling in class instead of taking notes. Throughout her teenage years, Rani’s artistic tendencies further developed and started to get recognised by her therapist, who encouraged her to experiment with various mediums and styles, especially when it seemed to help her process her trauma. In doing so, she discovered a particular talent for lino prints, her skills gaining her the ‘Young Artists - Ages 16-21’ award in the Bathala Art Gallery’s yearly competition.   With her mother’s support, Rani applied for the Art History course at the University of Bathala. She continues to create lino prints on the side (and has successfully sold a bunch of the prints online, her most popular print being a still life featuring a stack of pancakes and a generous breakfast spread entitled ‘Sweet Mornings’), but despite the more academic nature of the course, she is thoroughly enjoying her studies.

Education

Rani is currently studying Art History at the University of Bathala. She has furthermore signed up for a cooking class in order to further her culinary skills, though sadly it appears that her one and only specialty in that field is making pancakes.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Won an unofficial ‘cooking battle’ with her signature pancake stack during freshers week at university.   Awarded first place in the ‘Young Artists - Ages 16-21’ category in the Bathala Art Gallery’s yearly competition.   Sells her lino prints on a webshop designed for freelance artists.

Failures & Embarrassments

Burnt her muffins in culinary class.

Mental Trauma

Aside from losing her father at a young age, Rani was also kidnapped by a human trafficker when she was thirteen. The Dingo was going to sell her on to one of her clients, but with the help of Rue and Blue, she was saved before it got that far.

Personality Characteristics

Likes & Dislikes

Rani is obsessed with pancakes, frequently sending her friends pancake themed GIFs and inviting people over for so-called ‘pancake parties’. One of the few memories that Rani has of her father is of them making pancakes together, and her mother later on explained how her father used to say that pancakes were the ultimate feel-good food. After all, you’re never alone with pancakes.

Virtues & Personality perks

Rani is upbeat, her smile and enthusiasm making it easy for people to feel at ease with her. She furthermore has a fierceness to her that occasionally takes people by surprise, but becomes more understandable upon meeting her mother.

Vices & Personality flaws

Despite her mother’s best attempts, Rani gets distracted easily if she’s bored, which resulted in a few lower grades that by no means reflected her actual intelligence, merely her interest in the subject in question.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Rani has a few close friends at university and is overall well-liked by her peers. She furthermore wormed her way into Rue’s heart with her sunny disposition (and lots of pancakes), their bond solidifying further after being one of the first to witness Rue using their powers as they saved her from the Dingo.

Family Ties

With her father passing away when she was young, Rani developed a close bond with her mother. Like any child, she was occasionally embarrassed by her mother’s mollycoddling, but she deeply loves her mother and respects her strength and resilience. On occasion, when she’s really in trouble, she knows to fear her mother’s wrath.
