Last Light
The village of LAST LIGHT
It can take four days by horse drawn cart to reach the village from Sundown, if the weather holds, and even further on foot. Though a few tiny hamlets – clumps of one to a few houses and farmsteads – can be found along the Sundown Trail, the village of Last Light is the heart of “civilization” in the western marches beyond the Old West Road. Well, that is of course, not counting the fabled dwellings of the dwarves and elves and even halflings in these parts. For are they even really civilized?Location
The village lies on the east coast of Shimmer Lake, the main source of fresh water (though the river Sheen lies only slightly further south), as well as food (mostly fish but also some freshwater crustaceans). A small forest known as the Beechwold lies just south, and as a result most of the buildings in Last Light are built out of sturdy timber. North, pastures and fields as far as the eye can see, for the soil is fertile.Demographics
About 250 people are said to live in Last Light, though this is more an agreed upon consensus than an actual census. About as many men as women live in the village, and the population is almost entirely comprised of human settlers, with a few notable exceptions. Most are daytaler, fishing or harvesting when seasonal, though many do practice a specialized profession on the side, such as masonry or weaving.Government & protection
Last Light has no single appointed official or self-declared ruler, though in practice the Shrine of Saint Arundel holds a high level of authority. The village has an Elder Council, comprised of 6 notable and often older and wiser denizens of Last Light and 1 honorary member. The village has no fixed guardsmen or soldiers. To safeguard against petty crime and make sure the people of Last Light can sleep soundly at night, The Night Watch was created, made up of 25 able-bodied men and women.“Far beyond the Old West Road, forgotten by the Sundown folk.
On the shore of Shimmer Lake, where bees buzz and chimneys smoke.
Acres, bakers, candlemakers, rest your staff and mend your cloak.
Ale for sale at the Armored Snail, and other goods bespoke.
Ring the bell of Saint Arundel and her blessings doth evoke.”
