Margaret Wreath

Dowager Countess Margaret Wreath- Thetch

Margaret Wreath, née Thetch, is the matriarch of House Wreath. As mother to the current earl of the Rush, Nathaniel Wreath, she plays a key role in the running of the earldom and has done for many years. Her other children are Charlotte and Kristine; both high countesses. Born of relatively low status, her father was a mayor of some distinction, but it was her wits and sharp intelligence that caught the attentions of Ivan Wreath. After they wed, she began to orchestrate the circumstances that began House Wreath's rise to the top of Springmore's politics. In 965 EL, for example. she sent her daughter Charlotte to Beaucroft, where she met and married the soon to be high earl of Dregonvell, Edward Whitemount. Known throughout Eremere as a force to be reckoned with, she is regarded as one of the greatest minds Eremere has seen.

Personal history

Early Life

Born in 924 EL, Margaret's parents were not of high birth. Her father, Ulfred, was originally a merchant from Thendanor. A merchant in Crow's Rest and East Port, he saw an opportunity to expand his business and moved to the Rush. The family settled well into the large town near Ivy Hall, of which he eventually became mayor.   Margaret received a full education that was equal to a boy of her stature. Her natural skills and her father's wisdom instilled an incredible work ethic into the young Margaret, who always aspired for me.

Meeting Earl Ivan

Having a father with a name that carried weight was of immense use to Margaret. Unlike most commoners, the Thetch family found themselves invited to local parties and events of great prestige. Ulfred had made the family as powerful as any of their class could hope to be; Margaret believed it was time to reach the next level. She met Earl Ivan at his birthday party in 950 EL, where she bested his chancellor at a round of flyting. This caught the attention of Ivan and many others at caught. After a brief period of courtship, they were married by 952 EL.

Life as a Countess

Margaret knew her primary role as countess was to produce heirs for her husband, and in 953 EL their first child, Charlotte was born. Although a girl, it solidified her position in her husband's eyes to be fertile.   She took a far greater interest in her secondary role: advising her husband and assisting him in managing the realm. Margaret proved to be thoroughly able in most aspects of the court, sometimes heading council in place of her less interested husband and acting as a fully enabled regent when he was away.   Although it took her eight years to conceive again, conceive she did and in 961 EL her son, Nathaniel was born. Two years later, Kristine followed.   In later life, she still aspired for more. Her favourite child, though she did not make it known, was undoubtedly Charlotte, in whom she saw great potential that echoed her own merits. She sent her daughter to Beaucroft, where she acted as a handmaiden to the high countess of Lylelor, Clarissa Tarnell. Although unplanned, her daughter married the very powerful Edward Whitemount and became high countess of Dregonvell. Margaret was elated with the outcome of her strategy and capitalised. She married her second daughter off to the high earl of Springmore, John Tafford, thus solidifying her family's place in regional politics. Through Kristine, she had her liege's ear.   When it came to finding a wife for Nathaniel, Margaret was concerned about overstepping her reach. While her daughters' marriages provided solid alliances with powerful families, a similar match for her son might enable the wife's family to encroach on her son's earldom, upon his ascension. Instead, she opted for a more secure match that kept House Wreath in the driving seat. Her son married Freya Argent, from anther Springmore earldom of similar power.   Having served her husband for over thirty years, the two parted when Ivan died in 988 EL. His house had risen far above expectations due to Margaret, and continued that work into her son's reign.
