Drake

Overview

Drakes are a lesser type of dragon, known for their loyalty and territorial nature. Unlike true dragons, drakes are wingless and lack the intelligence and magical prowess of their more powerful cousins. However, they are fierce combatants and excellent guardians, often used by various groups for protection and companionship. Drakes are typically created through magical rituals and are closely associated with true dragons, often resembling the dragon type from which they originate.

Creation and Rituals

Drakes are typically created through a ritual that requires the scales of a true dragon, a large amount of fresh meat, and a cauldron. The ritual, which takes several days, involves infusing the dragon scales with magical energy to create a drake egg. The egg hatches within a few hours, and the newly hatched drake imprints on the first creature that feeds it.

Ritual Requirements:

  • 10 pounds of fresh dragon scales
  • A large amount of fresh meat
  • An iron cauldron
  • A mage skilled in arcana
The process transforms the scales and meat into a Small egg that hatches quickly. The resulting drake is fully grown within two to three weeks and can be trained in the same length of time.

Characteristics

  • Appearance: Drakes resemble the type of dragon they were created from but are wingless and have a more squat, muscular build.
  • Behavior: Drakes are territorial and fiercely loyal to their handlers. They can follow simple commands and are often used as guards or hunting companions.
  • Lifespan: Drakes have a shorter lifespan compared to true dragons, typically living for several decades.

Lore

Drakes are often associated with dragon-worshiping cults and societies. They serve as symbols of power and loyalty, reflecting the characteristics of their true dragon ancestors. Some legends suggest that drakes were originally created by Tiamat's cult to serve as loyal guardians and enforcers. Over time, the knowledge of creating drakes spread to other groups, leading to their widespread use across Eldetha.

Role in Society

Guardians: Drakes are commonly used to guard treasures, important locations, and high-ranking individuals. Their loyalty and combat prowess make them ideal for these roles. Companions: Some adventurers and nobles keep drakes as companions, training them for various tasks, including hunting and protection. Mounts: Larger drakes are used as mounts, particularly by dragon-worshiping cults and elite soldiers. These riding drakes are trained for battle and are highly prized for their strength and loyalty.   Drakes, while not as powerful or intelligent as true dragons, play a significant role in the magical and martial landscape of Eldetha. Their creation and use reflect the deep connection between the world's inhabitants and the legendary dragons they revere.
