Dragons

Overview

Dragons are winged reptiles of ancient lineage and fearsome power. They are known and feared for their predatory cunning and greed, with the oldest dragons accounted as some of the most powerful creatures in Eldetha. Dragons are also magical creatures whose innate power fuels their dreaded breath weapons and other preternatural abilities. Many creatures, including wyverns and dragon turtles, have draconic blood. However, true dragons fall into three broad categories: chromatic, gem, and metallic dragons. Though their goals and ideals vary tremendously, all true dragons covet wealth, hoarding mounds of coins and gathering gems, jewels, and magic items. Dragons with large hoards are loath to leave them for long, venturing out of their lairs only to patrol or feed. True dragons pass through four distinct stages of life, from lowly wyrmlings to ancient dragons, which can live for over a thousand years. In that time, their might can become unrivaled and their hoards can grow beyond price.

History

The Age of Dragons

Dragons once ruled as fearsome warlords and religious icons. This period, known as the Age of Dragons, saw dragons dominating vast territories and engaging in relentless conflicts. Dragons were devout followers of their draconic gods, and their wars were both territorial and religious.

The Dragon War

The Dragon War was a cataclysmic conflict initiated by the chromatic dragons under the leadership of Tiamat. Their goal was to eradicate the followers of Bahamut and increase their dominion. During this war, many mortal slaves saw an opportunity to rebel against their dragon overlords. The metallic dragons, guided by Bahamut, joined forces with these rebels. The coalition's efforts led to the banishment of Tiamat to the Nine Hells, significantly weakening the chromatic dragons and marking a turning point in Eldetha's history.

The God War

Following the Dragon War, Eldetha faced the God War, a monumental conflict between the Ascended (ancient deities) and the Prime Pantheon (newer gods). Dragons, divided by their loyalties, fought on both sides. The Prime Pantheon triumphed, banishing the Ascended to the Far Realm and establishing the Divine Barrier. This war further diminished the influence of dragons in Eldetha.

Dragonkin

Dragonborn

Dragonborn are humanoid dragonkin, often viewed with suspicion due to their involvement in the Dragon War. They strive to prove their worth and seek redemption from their dark past.

Drake

Drakes are lesser dragonkin created through magical rituals. They are loyal and territorial, often serving as guardians and watch beasts for those who can master the arcane arts required to create them.

Wyrm

Wyrms are lesser types of dragons, often considered young or underdeveloped in comparison to their more powerful kin. They possess some draconic abilities but lack the full range of powers of true dragons.

Influence on Culture

Dragons have left an indelible mark on the cultures of Eldetha. They are revered, feared, and respected in equal measure. Their legends, hoards, and ancient ruins continue to inspire adventurers and scholars alike. Despite their diminished numbers, dragons remain potent symbols of power and mystery, influencing the world's mythology, art, and history.

Conclusion

Dragons, with their rich history and complex roles in the world's events, continue to be significant figures in the lore of Eldetha. Their legacy shapes the landscape, politics, and cultures of the continent, making them enduring icons of both terror and awe.
