Once hailed as the greatest wielder of arcane power in the history of Cairne, the former advisor to the Sovereigns and magister of The University of Arcane Arts was revealed to have had far more nefarious plans in mind as the events of the conspiracy that he headed in conjunction with Fontelle Graz of the The Elk Riders and Sasha Vrend , high priestess of Volri were revealed following the calling down of the Blight that nearly wiped out all life on Cairne. Further evidence of his darker nature was uncovered in the discovery of the journals of Nicodemus Bernhold Garrintrough who discovered the final resting place of the mage, deep below the surface of a ruined and forgotten temple to Vrokhanna . Over the course of his investigations, it appears that the magister had performed an ancient and terrifying rite through with he was able to shrug off his mortal limitations and achieve a form of near immortality through undeath, becoming a Lich in the process. This attempt to prolong his existence turned out to be in vain however, as he was trapped by his own plot against the people of Cairne, the destruction caused by the impact of the Blight imprisoning him along with the residents of a small finishing village called Caster's Folly that was swallowed by the upheaval of the shockwave. It was there that he finally surrendered his persisting spirit and was claimed by the darkness he helped to create.

Personal history
Born to a small farmstead at the mouth of the Carrig River, Xendal found his life among the hard working people of his small community to be lacking at every turn. He was an ambitious child, one of seven, and forced to compete at most aspects of day to day life to be noticed. While he did not excel at the more physically driven and mundane tasks, he showed early on an inventive and creative intelligence that allowed him to surpass his siblings often, using his intellect to discover new means and methods of completing the tasks at hand. Noting this propensity for innovation, his parents enrolled him with the local magister to begin to learn a trade they felt might be more in line with his abilities. While the basis of the magisters instruction was little more than basic book keeping and accounting, the man did have a wide selection of books available in his private library, which Xendal quickly came to covet, stealing away at all hours to sneak into the chamber and peruse the books uninhibited and free to explore. It was during this time that he found and learned his first spell, neatly hidden within the pages of an old historic record. This sparked a passion in him as he felt the powers of the arcane course through him, and he, in turn, showed tremendous promise with the skill. Bordering on obsession, Xendal began digging deeper and deeper to find more, uncovering several other manuscripts and hints about other secrets.
Eventually, the magister caught him, and, once confronted, the young mage, feeling cornered, accidentally unleashed a blast of energy that killed his former mentor and set the house ablaze. He ran into the forests beyond and hid, learning some time afterward that no one had suspected a thing, and that people thought he too had perished in the fire. Using this, he set out to increase his knowledge and ability. His travels took him all over Cairne, devouring any and all knowledge he could find and applying it in as many facets of his ongoing quest to further his ability as he could, often times using his expanding base of knowledge to improve upon and craft new forms of the magic he had learned. As his ability grew, so too did his reputation, and before long hopeful initiates were seeking him out in hopes of studying under the wandering mage. Enthralled by the idea and enticed by the concept, he turned only the worst of them away, gaining a large following of hopefuls that he could teach and manipulate into acting as a buffer to the outer world and as a beneficial conduit through which he could wield even greater power by tapping into each of their abilities and focusing their collective power towards a singular goal. It was with this concept in mind that he began to build The University of Arcane Arts , secretly envisioning an army of arcane talent at his fingertip through which he might generate and control great aspects of power and arcane might that broke all the boundaries of the past and would elevate him to near god-like power.
