Yoten Highlands

The Yoten Highlands is a land of high mountains and deep valleys separated into two areas: the Inlands and the Outlands. The Outlands are open to travel from Oeystrand and lead up to Storm Tower and are less fertile than the Inlands. The Inlands are completely surrounded by mountains and only accessible through the fortress of Storm Tower. Beyond Storm Tower lies the more fertile lands of the Highlands, though no less difficult, more difficult at times to be sure. Outsiders often believed that the Highlands are a barren place where nothing grows and the living is a savage one, but that is not entirely the case. The valleys of the Highlands can be rather lush though they do lack much in the way of trees and risk flooding when heavy rains come down from the mountains. For this reason it is difficult to farm in the Highlands without proper precautions in place.

Geography

Surrounded by mountains, the highlands are a rough terrain with very little flat ground. Dozens of small tributaries carve through the low areas of the highlands keeping the ground fertile but threatening flooding when rains come down from the mountains. The ground is hard and rises and falls steeply making it difficult for carts to make their way through them without being stuck.

Localized Phenomena

The Tempest Spires along the western mountains of the highlands hosts a constant thunderstorm at all times.

Fauna & Flora

Natural: few trees, many wildflowers, wild berries, cherry bushes, plums, shrubs and climbers
Agriculture: sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuces, radishes, beans, peas, onions, zucchini, carrots, parsnips and rhubarb
Wildlife: wild cats, wyverns, behir, drakes, kobolds, goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears, some stone giants, giant goats, bullettes, mountain giants, Rock trolls, At least one community of Rocs, etc. At one time in Yoten history it is said that a dragon lived among the mountains that they called 'The Protector', but they are assumed dead now, invoked only traditionally.

Farming

With the roughness of the ground leaving little room for large plots of farming, most farming is done in either small sections or on manually flattened land or plateaus among the mountains above the cities they grow for.
